1996 Mitsubishi RVR from Kenya - Comments

"Nice car with good potential"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Ever since getting the car, it has never quite settled down - firstly it had amazing fuel consumption and also had an intermittent miss. My mechanics suspected the problem was somewhere in the fuel line and have since replaced almost everything from plugs and air filter to injector nozzles and some electrical sensor relating to fuel control. The car runs smoothly now

though I feel it has a 'lazy' or 'dull' sound to it compared to how it was before. All the mechanics

think its running OK though.

Fuel consumption is still quite high and the exhaust gets black and

very sooty. what mileage per liter should I expect from it (1990CC petrol). I've been told to expect 10-11km for town running. I'm doing less than 8!

The auto transmission also fails to shift up sometimes running up the engine revs quite high. When it slows down completely or stops however, it shifts OK when started up again.

Never figured out how to set the compass either!!

Does any one recognize these problems and any suggestions?

I can be reached at gerald@roofspeckenya.com. I will really appreciate it.

General comments?

Otherwise the car is quite nice and becoming very popular in Nairobi. I wish Mitsubishi had spent more time developing it.

I'm a wheelchair user and for me, the sliding door and the room at the back is sheer genius.

Contratulations the manufacturers and dealers of Mitsubishi RVR. I am a proud Owner of Mitsubishi RVR Model 1993 which I acquired this year 2005.It had a mileage of 48000 and is now at 53000.

I think it is really a value for money. However I can't set or interpret the Compass reading, The fun belt makes funny noise when the engine is started.

Could anyone help me with a copy of the Manual in English as the one I have is in Japanese or advise me on my E-mail henrylekululu@yahoo.com

Thank you.

Hi I have just purchased a 1996 RVR Sports Gear. The compass was not working, but I figured it was similar to boats flux-gate compass. It works fine now. Here's how I fixed it.

I found a roundabout (any open area that allows you to turn 720 degrees clockwise). I pushed the right bottom button until the compass flashed then drove around the roundabout twice. The compass stopped flashing having calibrated itself and has work ever since.

Problems I have noticed since buying the RVR are serious smoke only after extended idle (valve guides?) engine missing up hill in overdrive mostly. Gearbox clunk when coming to a stop in OD.

I am thinking of buying a Mitsubishi RVR.

Different people have told me that I can expect problems with the engine, especially the gear box.

Can anyone tell me if this is a general problem with the RVR or is it a problem of a special model or of a special year of construction.

Hi, I have purchased a 1996 RVR Sports Gear, but since I changed the battery, the motor runs with imperfection (roughly) after starting cold. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Please contact me at: muttass@gmail.com.

I recently purchased a 1996 RVR, ironically, and I didn't know this until I checked this page out, it belonged to Gerald (the comment above). Very interesting!! Thing is, I need help with getting the auto-gearbox transmission working right. I have spent over one month assembling gearbox problems, changed so much stuff, but still can't engage the overdrive. It runs free when o/d is engaged. Anyone know how to solve this mystery? Secondly, my idling is a mess, its up / down / and rough! Otherwise a lovely ride.

From Jamaica:

Recently purchased a RVR SportsGear 1997. good running condition. Like the other owners I have found encounters with fuel consumption, with the idling and the transmission. I love this vehicle and want to have in perfection condition. Any suggestions, e-mail to juliemoo22@yahoo.com.
