1993 Toyota Landcruiser VX Auto from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Great fun"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Headlamp main beam relay fails about every 30,000 miles (first 100,000 miles under extended Toyota warranty). Next failure will be my cost. About £40 for the relay. It's easy to replace!

Switch to driver's electric window became harder to operate. Replaced under warranty at about 90,000 miles.

UJ in rear driveshaft replaced at about 40,000 miles.

Front discs replaced. Rear discs will be replaced at the next service.

General comments?

The most reliable car I've owned so far.

Even the batteries (there's two for 24V starting) are original (7.5 years old and 113,000 miles!).

Reading your entry about the Headlamp high beam relay failure on your 1993 Toyota Landcruiser, canyou tell me would this relay failure effet the rear fog lamps aswell?

This car has now done 176,000 miles. The starter motor would not always disengage so replaced with a new one at 140,000 miles. The headlight relay still fails regularly. I can repair them and get an extra 5,000 to 12,000 miles. A solenoid in the auto gearbox failed at 160,000 miles. This meant the torque converter lock up did not operate. Solenoid was £60 + £360 to diagnose and fit. Oil pressure is low when engine is hot (climbing the Alps). I now use 5W50 synthetic Engine oil instead of the 10W30 recommended. Keeps me happy with the Oil Pressure gauge looking OK. Engine Oil is stays clean for at least 3,000 miles after each change. Ordinary oil cooks and goes black much sooner.

I went through a really big flood and dirt must have got into the O/S hub, I had to replace the offside wheel bearings 3 times. After also replacing the front diff oil (contaminated with some water) it is now OK. Though I don't see why this should affect the wheel bearings. 2 of the 3 bolts came out on the nearside swivel arm. Probably not tightened properly after nearside wheel bearings replaced. Symptoms are very imprecise steering. This is dangerous. It could have failed big time. This is still my most favorite car. It starts after a quarter of a second of cranking. It is on it's second set of batteries. Can't complain; 176,000 miles and 13.5 years old. Drives very quietly and smoothly. I have just returned from at 4,000 mile trip across the Alps to Croatia; I even taken it from England to the Ukraine. I feel I can really rely on it. It has never let me down. Everything still works: Air-con, alternator, water-pump, electric windows, electric sunroof, rear window defogger etc etc. I did have a period of frequently replacing rear lamp bulbs. I think there were cheap replacements and poor quality. The last time was over 3 years ago. I have had to replace the front and rear disks. I now buy Chinese made disks. Front disks last about 50,000 to 70,000 miles which is just as good as the OEM disks and about 1/3rd the price. I have also replaced the shocks with OEM shocks and replaced suspension bushes. The front Exhaust pipe with the flexible joint finally gave up the ghost at about 135,000 miles. The tail box had been replaced before. The center box is still original. The alloy wheels are somewhat corroded and need refurbishment. It failed the MOT on uneven braking. Pulled to the left. This was fixed with a new caliper cylinder seal kit £10. So apart from the huge cost of Diesel in the UK, now 99p per liter (or about £1.98 per L before tax and NI for the higher rate taxpayer) it is very economical. I will certainly buy another Landcruiser when the time finally comes. This time I will consider secondhand - they are just so good why buy a brand new one? BTW IMO local Toyota Agents are pathetic. You have to use independent experts. New Toyotas are so reliable and Landcruisers so rare in the UK (most people here can't afford to buy or run them,) that the dealers don't know squat; and of course they rarely see them because the owners of older Landcruisers probably know better than to go to the main dealer.

Agree with everyone else, this is the best car I have ever owned. At 13 yrs old and bought at just six months old my land cruiser has never broken down the only hitches have been as follows:

60,000 miles the starter motor stayed on after switching off the engine (not good when it was in the garage and no access to the front of the motor!)

80,000 miles the drivers electric window motor stopped (£27 to fix)

90,000 brakes failed after long hard fast hill driving in Peak District, my fault £750.00 to fix)

110,000 miles the original exhaust needed replacing which I had done with a non Toyota exhaust which was probably the worst thing I did as the exhaust is very noisy now 250.00 to fix.

130,00 air con broke and still not fixed - probably my fault as I switched it off to try and save on fuel a false economy to be sure!

145,000 still going strong!

I am driving the vehicle of my dreams and have absolutely no intention of changing it - I used to wonder who would be driving my landcruiser when it was 10 years old, now I hope I'm still driving it when it's 30!
