1994 Toyota Soarer GT from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Superb!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Condensation in passenger side headlamp, easily dried out with a little patience.

Occasionally squeaky, rear anti roll bar bushes, at slow speeds.

Small, not very noticable, cracks in the interior door trim.

All the above are relatively commonly found problems with Soarers.

General comments?

This is a very smooth and quiet luxury grand tourer with sports coupe styling. A nice head turner! Performance with the 3.0 litre engine is adequate, but not mind blowing. My fuel economy, with mixed, but mainly town driving, averages between 25-30mpg.

Very solid with good build quality throughout.

Despite being nice and spacious for the driver and front passenger, for such a large car space seems to be limited. The rear seats are next to useless for anything other than small children. The boot is deceptively small too, but it's still just big enough to get a couple of suitcases in.

Headroom is good in my non sunroof model with at least 5cm to spare. I'm 6ft 3.

It's a 2.5cc engine not a 3.0cc, so the performance for a 1600kg car is very good.

To the above poster: The 30 series Soarer came with three engine options: The 2.5 1jz-gte twin turbo (later single turbo), the 3.0 2jz-gte NA engine and the 4.0l 1uz-fe V8.

I'd been reading various comments on the web about Soarer's for some time (mostly very good) so I realised there had to be something to them. The first one I test drove supposedly had around 120,000 k's on the odometer, but It drove like a car that had done a lot more. And the dealer in question wanted $12,000, with no registration or roadworthy Certificate. Not a good buy at all. Three months later, I happened to test another one with the same k's, but this one drove like it had done around half that mileage. The quad cam V8 was super responsive, the handling was incredible, with great feedback through the steering at speed. The interior and fit out of these cars is amazing, seeing they first saw the light of day in 1991. And what about that top of the range sound system? You feel like you're in a concert hall. To sum up, I've owned cars that I've paid twenty times as much, and while they were great to drive, they didn't drive any better than my mighty ($8,000, and with a roadworthy certificate to boot!) Soarer. Would I ever buy another one or recommend them to anyone? In a heartbeat!
