1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS from North America - Comments

"It's a very fun car to drive!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The top leaks a little at the front corner of both the driver side and passenger side windows. A small amount of water does get in when washing the car or in really heavy rains.

The driver's door power console is sinking into the door. This is due to the plastic seats for the screws inside the console cracking and subsequently breaking. Fortunately, I can fix this myself with an $85 replacement part.

My biggest complaint is the black "tar" or sealant that drips out of the bottom of the doors onto the sill plate, and is now beginning to seep out of the seals around the top. It is sticky and if you get it on anything - it will not come off! The dealer wanted over $500 to remove it from inside both doors. I'm going to try to remove it myself.

General comments?

I love the way the car handles.

It's 5 years old, but still run well and turns heads!

We too have the same problem with our '99 Spyder. The top leaks around the front corners. The driver's door control does fall into the door. I will say that this vehicle was involved in a T-Bone collision a couple months ago. It withstood the impact extremely well. I will most like buy a Mitsubishi again.

I just bought a 99 GS with 35000 miles.

Had the same problem with the "black ooze" coming out of the door on hot days. Took the door panel off and noticed they used black mastic to seal the clear plastic to the inside of the door frame. I peeled this back carefully, then used a mild solvent ro remove some excess (not all) mastic. I then resealed the plastic and covered the edges neatly with duct tape being careful not to block the drain holes at the bottom of the door and keeping the tape inside of the interior door panel area of coverage. Took about 1/2 hr and I no longer have to keep cleaning the sill plate. As far as the top you can adjust it to seal better at the front. Overall the interior is not up to Honda fit and finish standards, but otherwise this is a fun car to drive and looks great. I got rid of my 94 Integra with 160,000 miles to buy the Spyder. I don't think the Spyder will hold up as well as the Integra after 160000 but I didn't pay much for it either... Good cheap fun!

Well with my 99' eclipse convertible I had the same deal with the water leaking at the front corners, but everything else is great I have a clean system and it runs great! Is there any way to stop the leaking? But, If I do decide to sell my eclipse what kind of car do you recommend I heard the nissan 350z is a great choice. But I don't know I love my Car so much!
