This is not the car you would want to buy whilst on you p's. it has cost me a lot of money fixing problems yet they find a way to re occur.
It has no performance and not even beat a Gemini due to carburetor never working well. the engine chuckles after 3000rpm.
Handling is a problem. it under-steers easily. but also a very smooth and comfortable car.
Most of these problems are fair wear and tear.
If you want a car with nothing wrong with it don't buy one that's this old!
A Gemini? Who'd want to race a Gemini anyway? Aren't they for old ladies and poor people?
Hey, the TM Magna's had a fair few bugs in them like the weak auto transmission, some cracked heads and blocks within the first 100,000km. Fair enough the TM wasn't the best of the first gen series (as it was the first), but look where the TM led the Magnas; 20 years of great Australian motoring.
The TN's have a few less problems that were rectified as Mitsubishi learnt of these and rectified the problems in the TN and TP.
I have a 1990 TP Grand Tourer Magna. When I got it, it had 498,000km on the clock, and the day I picked it up, the reco motor that was dropped into it the week prior only had 7km on it, so a fresh reconditioned motor after 498,000km.
And as for you who say the first gen TM, TN and TP Magna's ain't good for p platers; tough luck, I have had a TP Elite as my first car and now a TP GT Grand Tourer (as I wanted a manual and my sister got her l's and wanted an auto, so she bought the GT for me for $1000 and transfered the Elite into her name and the GT was mine. She's now on her P's and I'm 5 months out from getting a full licence, also on my P's)
The first gens are great (the TP's are the better of the 3 TM, TN and TP as the kinks were worked out).
I've driven most of the model Magna's except for the TJ and TE, and they're all fantastic to drive.
