What things have gone wrong with the car?

This comment is regarding the ignition coil problem on the 2000 Nissan Maxima. My mom's 2000 Maxima only has about 35,000 miles on it, but it's about 4 years old, so it's out of warranty. Recently the "Check Engine Soon" light came on. We took it to a Nissan dealership service department. They ran a diagnostic test ($80) and said it's giving multiple misfire readings. They recommended replacing all six ignition coils, and cleaning the throttle body and fuel injectors. Total cost about $1174.

I balked at that price, and called an independent repair shop. The mechanic was told me that he had seen this same problem on several Maximas he had worked on, and he actually printed out the Technical Service Bulletin for me (from something called "ALLDATA") so I could take it with me to the dealership! You can read the service bulletin (NTB01059) on the NHTSA (National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration) web site: www.nhtsa.dot.gov. Unfortunately, it doesn't give as much information as what is on the print out the mechanic gave me. The summary on the NHTSA web site is:

"INFORMATION REGARDING MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP ON WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE AND OR SPARK KNOCK DUE TO IGNITION COIL.*JB"

(I have no idea who or what "*JB" is)

The bulletin was issued on September 6, 2001.

Here are some details from the print out the mechanic gave me:

If an applied vehicle exhibits one or both of the below symptoms:

MIL "ON" with DIP P1320 stored in the ECM Intermittent spark knock (detonation)

The cause may be one or more of the ignition coils.

I encourage everyone who has this vehicle with this problem to report it to the NHTSA. You can call them at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (888-327-4236) or submit the report via their web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov. I am hoping that if enough people report the problem, the NHTSA will require Nissan to issue a recall. Other than this ignition coil problem, my mom likes the car very much and hasn't had any other problems with it.

My Mother In Law has the same problem with her 2000 Maxima. It started in the Spring of 2005 with the check engine light coming on. She brought it into the dealer for a computer analysis, but by then, the light was off.

Of course, her car was out of warranty by then.

The code indicated a general misfiring which could either be a spark plug or an ignition coil. With those inclusive results, the dealer advised her to bring it back as soon as the light came on again or the engine ran rough.

Local mechanic tried to help by replacing the spark plug, but that was a short term solution and her intermittent problem persists. Now, he also found the Service Bulletin, NTB01059, and he wants to replace all six Ignition coils.

His estimate is around $800.00 for the complete job.

On your advice, I will place an online complaint with the

www.nhtsa.dot.gov on her behalf with the hopes that, a recall will eventually be issued regarding this problem.

I have NISSAN Maxima year 2000, and the car has the CHECK ENGINE SERVICE light on problem too. Sometimes the light turns off by itself, sometimes it turns on. This bothers me a lot and recently it failed SMOG Check. It really disappoints me. A 6 year old car could not pass SMOG test.

I have a Nissan Maxima 1999. Recently I also got the engine light on again (last time due to O2 sensor failure). I took it to the dealer. They told me one coil failed after they checked for me. They recommend to change all of the 6 and would cost $1000. After some thinking I just asked them to replace the bad one. I will put my effort on the web. Thank you.

I own a 2000 Maxima and have had problems with the coil going bad in my car as well. Fortunately mine was under warranty and they had to fix it -- but they only replaced one. I haven't had any problems since, with that anyway. I have had my check engine light come on and it was my oxygen sensor- that was replaced on them too. If you have a check engine light come on I suggest you go to Auto Zone- they will put it on a little hand held diagnostic and it costs nothing. They also sell it for about $80. At least you'll have some idea to the problem I do not trust mechanics!!

I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima and I had a check engine light on. I took my car to the dealer. They said 3 ignition coils have gone bad and recommended me to replace all of them at a price of $700. Looks like this is a common problem for the maximas and Nissan should do something about this seriously (by recalling and replacing with better quality ignition coils) as it is a heavy burden for anyone to pay such an amount for something that shouldn't happen in the first place.

Hi there.

I have a 97 neon and have been looking to upgrade now for a little while. The point in which I really noticed that it's time for an upgrade would be last week, in the middle of a snow storm when my brake lines decided that they've had enough of working... and decided not to. While barely avoiding a very serious tragedy, my brakes ended up costing me a total of about $430.00 to correct the problem. I needed new brake pads, rotors, brake lines, calibres, geesh, I'm not even sure what else to tell you the truth as I don't have my invoice right here. And I understand that that's all maintenance, but I'm getting tired of paying it for a 97 neon. So I've had my eyes set on getting a black maxima for quite some time... and it just so happens that a friend of mine has a friend that has a 99 maxima for sale. He's asking $8500 for it and he told me that there's about 152,000 kms on it. That's roughly the same amount of kms that my neon had on it when I bought that, however, the neon was a hell of a lot cheaper than the maxima is as you could probably guess. I read the posts in this forum, as well as posts on other websites that I've been researching. The coil and misfire problem is something that I've encountered with my neon as well. For a while, it seemed like every 4 months I had to get my O2 sensor replaced and just other coils and engine problems so to me, that's nothing new. As with cars in this day and age, we have to expect for things to break and for people to try to jip us whenever they see the opportunity, but the car is really nice. The gentleman selling it bought it 2 years ago for $10,500 but he also put about $10,000 worth the "gear" into it. Stereo, new tires, leather (heated) seats which is something that I really didn't even care for, but I'll definitely take. My neon is rapidly approaching 10 years old... and I love it to death, but it's about that time to part ways. I have no complaints, but I had no intentions of driving a neon forever. So I was just wondering if there were any major problems that I should be aware of, especially with the car having over 150,000 kms on it already because you know that someone selling you the car isn't going to tell you what could potentially happen next week. I'm going to get my dad to have a look at it as he really should have been a mechanic, but choose to let that be a hobby instead. But I was just wondering if there's anything I should know from someone who actually owns one. Thanks a lot.

I'm also the owner of a 1999 Maxima and have had an ignition coil problem. I actually had to wait on the part as all the dealers in the area were out of stock due to heavy demand for the part!

This definitely should be a recall. Instead it has turned into a cash cow for Nissan and its dealers. As owners we should do everything possible to get our money back.

Make sure you go file a complaint as described above to the NTH-SA.

I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima with only 60,500 miles to date. As with the above owners, I had the "check engine light" diagnosed as needing 6 new ignition coils. I have a copy of the Nissan Service Bulletin which instructs the shops on the diagnosis and replacement of the ignition coils. I have called several service shops and this problem is a constantly reoccurring problem. I will have second thought about buying another Nissan.

I bought a 2000 Maxima with 69000 miles on it about a year ago. After only a couple of months, I had to replace an ignition coil. Now it has 82000 miles on it and I need to replace at least one more ignition coil. It seems like this is an incredibly common problem with 2000 Maximas. Nissan should definitely issue a recall on the part. I'll be posting a complaint!

I'm driving 99 maxima. Summer last year car was rough and the light was on. I brought to autozone to scan. The result was the coil #3 went bad. So and I went to my friend's bodyshop and pickup a good coil from a part car (accident car to use for part). Replacing it and drove for about 3-4 months and get the rough driving again. No light was on or flashing. Lately the car was acting bad. Light is flashing almost every trip and I can feel the misfire problem is getting wrost. I brought to dealer and the told me the problem is "electrical" while this common problem I found on the web say "knock sensor" or "coil" problem. Started from yesterday the lights was on constantly and I went autozone again and this time the scanner gave me the error code P300 (multiple cylinder misfire), which could result from the following

1 - EGR; I already have a spare one

2 - Fuel compression; I replaced the fuel filter

3 - Fuel Injector; To expensive to buy a new set

4 - Coil; I can stop by and take the rest from the other car

5 - Sparkplug; I replaced them at the first time this problem occurred.

Now, I have no idea what should do next. Either save that money for fixing this stupid car for buy other brand such as Toyota or Honda or selling this as soon as I can.

I had the same problem with my 1999 Nissan Maxima SE. I had just bought it with 83,000 miles and after less than a week of driving the Service Engine Soon light came on. I took it to two different repair shops, one Nissan dealer, the other a GoodYear service center, and both gave me the same answer (of course I paid separately for both diagnostics. They said they diagnostic didn’t tell them which coil was bad, so I had to have all 6 replace for almost $1000.

I took the vehicle to have an oil change two weeks ago, and then it started to run weird. Like it was cold and sputtering while I was driving. Now my Service Engine light is back. I hope they don’t tell me it’s the coils again. If so, I’ll just sell this beast. I love the way it rides, but twice in less than 4 months is just too much for me!

Same problem here. I have a 2000 Maxima SE. At about 87,000 I had to replace the coils. Now at 94,000 miles, it is starting to run a little rough and make the same noises it did before (strange pinging/misfiring sound when I first hit the gas from a stop).

I have the same problem with my 1999 Maxima GLE. It only has 48k miles on it, and the Service Engine light is on and off all the time. Initially, I thought it was related to the bad gasoline I used. But over the weekend, I took my car to Auto Zone to have it checked out (it is free!), and they said it was the "knock sensor" problem. Looks like this is the common problem for all Nissan Maxima.

I also had that problem, with my 2000 Nissan

Maxima, my check engine light would come on after turning the cruise control on, and then ill use it again then it would cut off. I went to Auto zone and they told me O2 senor, I really dont know what the problem is, but the car has 86,000 miles on it.
