The car is a 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT. It has been sitting in my grandmother's garage since 1982. She gave it to me to work on for myself to drive, and my dad used to work on cars all the time when he was a kid, so he helped me.
The only thing wrong with it was that when it was parked, the power steering assist cylinder leaked, and over time the shocks in the rear, which are air adjusted, leaked. But that is about it.
Some fine tuning had to be done, including a complete rebuild on the carb, but even when we tried starting it without the carb being tuned or rebuilt, the engine ran like a dream. The 390 4V engine is one of the best built.
The car is very powerful, with a 9 inch Ford rear end with posi, which means both wheels drive in the rear, and 427 pounds of torque, and 335 horsepower, this thing is a machine.
The only change I have to make is put new head on so it can accept unleaded regular fuel, not the racing fuel, which is 4.29 per gallon here in state. Other than that, I love the car, and to top it off, it is a convertible. My friends love it, even though it's not on the road yet!!!
Guess ole granny did some serious driving (on racing fuel, no less) to have accumulated 637,300 miles in 16 years.
Course, the odometer only goes up to 99,999 so how would you know that it got up to such high mileage?
Keep in mind that when his Granny was driving, you could still get leaded fuel. She didn't have to run racing fuel, just plain old cheap leaded gasoline.
I meant there are only 63K. I don't think a car would ever make it to 637K.
You don't really understand what a "Posi" is, do you?
Cool car-
Don't be busting the kid over the posi thing- he knows it drives both back tires, and that's good enough.
At least his car HAS the posi- which is good.
I know where there is a '65 Comet with low mileage, but 6-cylinder- and the engine bay won't accept a big block without some cutting it looks like-so finding a Cyclone with 390 in it is a great muscle car find.
That thing is worth a good buck on Ebay buddy!
When I was 16 my first car was a '66 cyclone gt convertible, red. I sold it it with 20k on it and in 2 weeks the guy I sold it to totalled it. I would like to buy another just like it. anyone know where I can get one? singersyd@aol.com.
I had one in 1969. I traded it in on a VW fastback in 1973. They had 2 colors of red, a deep red, and a coral red. Mine was the coral red with a white vinyl top, and white vinyl interior. It had the 390 with the automatic. The biggest problem with it was that whenever you got on it, you'd break a motor mount because Ford couldn't make a motor mount that could handle the torque. I loved that car, and would pay a lot to find the twin to it in good condition!!
I have 3 comets, 1 a 1964 comet 404 wagon, a 1964 Caliente, and a 65 cyclone my first car ever and I still have it, well I sold in 1992 baby on the way and then in 2002, seen an ad in the local paper and went to see it, guess what is was my old car and still had my paper work in the trunk, so now my son and me work on the cars and it a hell of fun. Your is major bucks if it is a 427, man that is a lot of money for that car you could get 100.000 for it easy.
Take care
