"A face only deer seem to love"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The little lever that moves the rearview mirror seems to be the only original piece on the car.

General comments?

You can imagine my excitement when I was given my grandfather's ancient oldsmobile sedan for my 16th birthday! There's nothing cooler than whitewall tires, an interior that resembles that of a cheap coffin, and AM/FM radio! No sooner had I repainted the car and installed a Cd player than a large female deer decided that her best escape route from NOTHING was right into the side of "Ol' Blue", my car's affectionate, though incorrect nickname, as little actual blue paint remains... most of the surface area is now covered with rust, primer, bulletholes, or caulk from a cheap headlight repair after ANOTHER deer decided to meet an untimely end with the opposite side of my car. The headliner decided that life itself was too much to handle and collapsed over my eyes one warm summer day, and the bare ceiling has since become my personal autograph collection, complete with a set of sharpie markers in the glovebox and a unique game of basketball with a junebug that happened to find it's way into my (now unfunctioning, thank you very much) dome light. The car is now a mess, with unmatched tires and sizes, and nearly everything unessential for survival either broken or missing.

I must say, however, that with the exception of normal wear and tear items, or things broken in extraordinary circumstances, the car has, and still does serve me well. I often put over 1000 miles a week on it, and still feel very confident in it's ability. I get over 22 miles per gallon in city driving, and the car is very safe.

All things considered, though there are many nicer cars out there, I could not have been given a better car to start out with.

I loved the way you described your Delta's history. I also own a 89 Olds Delta 88 Royale, and I love it. I just wish that I would have been able to see "Ol Blu", sounds like your luck with the deer is bout as good as mine is. I have been lucky enough to not hit a deer with the Delta yet, but my luck proved to get me last September 25, when I was rear ended by a 95 Lincoln Town Car. The Delta held up very well, although the insurance company totaled mine, I bought her back and fixed her, looks good as new. It's good to see that your olds has held up for 230 K miles, mine is now at 173K, and I'm looking forward to many more miles. Have a good day.

My parents had an 86 delta 88 white with red leather interior. The car ran extremely smoothe and had great power. They hit 3 deer in it. One ran into the right side front wheel well. My dad was going to have a target painted on the front after the third one. Anyway, it ran great until he totaled it. It had 120k miles on it when that happened.

This too was my first car, given to me from grandma. I added the teenager life saver items, loud stereo, mismatched tires, lead in right foot, spare change of clothes in back seat, lots of hail damage, and a few war wounds around the body

I ran this car for about 25K miles, until the trans blew out, then replaced the car. This car was used to tow a 16' lund boat, then motocros bikes, and a heavy load now and then. so I guess the trans was my fault.

I got about 22-30 mpg in it (drove lots of country) Wonderful first car, good to learn in, safe and zippy. but I seem to have had many close encounters with deer as well...conspiracy?

As the proud owner of a 1989 Oldsmobile 88 Royale,I would like to say that it was among the best cars built in America. The one I currently own has almost 200,000 miles on it and it shows no sign of quiting soon. The 3800 series V-6 engine is without a doubt one of the best engines developed by GM. With it's combination of power, torque and durability, it was a perfect match for the the car. With proper care I'm sure mine will reach 300,000 miles and beyond. It's too bad that GM pulled the plug on Oldsmobile for it has built a car that was the equal of any built by Toyota, Honda and other Japanese car makers.

Count on doing some lower engine work on that 3800...ie bearings. other than that good engine. I got the series 2 supercharged in my buick park ave. lots of tire roasting fun.
