"Never buy an automatic Volkswagen"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

This car has been nothing but a disappointment to me since I bought it. It has had serious transmission problems and finally two days ago it broke down at the side of the road and I was stuck at midnight alone waiting for a tow truck. I understand that my warranty has expired, but I would expect a four year old car to last longer then 4 years. I took the car in when it first started to skip gears and Volkswagen mechanics told me that there was nothing they could do for me because the transmission is a lifetime deal and you can't take it apart to fix. Four hundred dollars later I was still stuck with a car that no one could fix, and now I have to bear the costs of replacing my transmission all together. I tried contacting Volkswagen Canada and they did not care at all, which I find highly disrespectful considering the fact that they should be trying to keep a loyal consumer base rather then attempting to tear it down. So unfortunately now I am without a car for the next couple weeks while I wait patiently to find a transmission. If anyone else has had this problem can you please reply and let me know. Thank you.

General comments?

I have a new car with no transmission and I am unsatisfied with the service Volkswagen provides its customers.

I empathize with you! I HAD a lemon 2002 Jetta. The auto transmission was replaced @ 11,000 km and again @ 12,000 km. Both due to leaking seals. Luckily it was under warranty but it took numerous trips to the dealer before the reason was found. The car had a lot of other problems too. We finally traded that lemon in after 2 years, at a loss. But at least the stress of, "Is this car going to leave me stranded? and "How long before the next problem?" is gone.

Email this guy...he's one of VW Canada "after sales managers". paul.gommerman@vw.com (phone: 604-734-2688)

Can't guarantee you'll get anywhere with him, but he needs to know that VW is continuing to sell lemons.

Hi, I have had this exact same problem with my 2000 Volkswagen GLS. The transmission went on July 29th (symptoms were that the car would start, but would not go out of park regardless of what gear it was in). Everyone said I had to replace it. Unfortunately, I was on vacation in another province at the time. It took over a week to get a new transmission installed. There are still problems with the new transmission, and we will have to look into replacing it again (the part is under warranty thankfully, however I don't think the re-installation is!) Based on other posts, it seems this is a common problem - I'm writing a letter to Volkswagen right now to explain this, and all of the other problems I've had (Including window motors, comfort module, bulbs, front end issues...etc.) I assumed when I purchased the vehicle that Volkswagens were reliable : (
