"Not very reliable at all"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

In December 2003 I brought a new Nissan X Trail T Spec Diesel after only a few weeks the electrical and lighting system failed and a unit within the dash area had to be replaced. The part was not available in the United Kingdom and had to be ordered from Japan. Now nine months later and only nine thousand miles a fault with the diesel injection system has again meant that the vehicle is off the road again this time for up to three weeks as no parts are available in the United Kingdom.

General comments?

Sadly Nissan in my case have not been very helpful at all, the dealer is fine, but there is little or no customer service. Sadly the Nissan technical service backup is lacking to.

I have to agree with the comments of this Nissan x trail owner. My X Trail SVE was almost two months old when the turbo started to whine I was with out the car almost a month. At first I was told that even thought the car was only a few months old the turbo would have to be repaired rather than a new unit fitted. This resulted in the turbo being sent away. The Nissan customer service centre gave the impression that they did not care at all and to put any comments in writing, this I did and no reply was ever received even though my letter of concern was sent by recorded post.

I bought my X-Trail 2.2 TD Sport in Sept 2003. To date I have had no problems of any kind with this car. The only visits to the dealer have been for routine services.

My x trail also has problems with the injection system which have been intermittent fron 9000 to 32000 miles. It has been in the workshop for 3 weeks now awaiting parts. I am planning to visit it on Friday to remind myself what it looks like and wish it happy first birthday.

Has anyone had problems with oil leaks from the air con unit, oil leaks from the front of the unit and then covers the front of the engine. Dealer has attempted to cure the leak with no success, also 3 other nc53 reg x trail vehicles in our area suffer from the same fault. Having no help from Nissan so would welcome any advice.

Hi.

My x-trail has oil leak at front of engine from the intercooler. First Nissan garage refused to take car in and said I had to take it elsewhere. Went elsewhere and twice the car was in being inspected and twice they said no oil leak even though I could see the oil ready to drip. Great car - very poor customer service - I will never buy a Nissan again!

I have a company 2004 X-trail 2.2 DCI Sport. All was fine until approx 25,000 miles when the turbo developed a whine. My local Nissan dealer replaced the turbo although they did not seem interested in the oil leak fro the intercooler unit. The car was off tyhe road for 2 weeks.

The new turbo lasted approx 2,500 miles then developed the same whine as the original. Nissan dealer has now replaced turbo, intercooler and ECU. I have picked the car up today, and am wondering how long it will last this time. According to the Nissan dealer the turbo failure on the 2.2 DCi engine is a known problem with all replacement units supposedly being modified!!

Generally I think the X-Trail is a great car shame about the reliability of the 2.2DCI engine.

My X-trail diesel registered in September 04 has done 9300 miles & the turbo has just packed up. The garage say the replacement will be a modified part. I am not sure if this modification has what is known as a 'boost sensor' which the garage says is an upgrade, free under warranty. Does anyone know if there is any relationship with this 'boost charger' & the turbo problem. I must admit I sometimes have a bit of a lag when pulling out onto say a roundabout. Perhaps this is what it is for! It's a bit of a blow on such a good car.

Also I am told it is a common problem that the heater takes so long to warm up. It takes ages to defrost the screen on a frosty morning. The garage says it is common with diesels, but I have a diesel RAV4 & it is much quicker. Could do with an upgrade for this problem.

My X-Trail 2.2 DCI SVE has just developed the "turbo whine" fault. This is at 15,000 miles.

Looking under the bonnet I also note that there is a small oil leak from the intercooler as well (I wondered why I smelt burning the other week!).

Booked in to dealers in 1 weeks time (hope car lasts that long) and then I will have to take it back as first dealer trip will be to "get Nissans authorisation to replace the turbo".

Strange I told the dealer the symptoms and they then told me what car I had!

'Strange I told the dealer the symptoms and they then told me what car I had!'

My comments are for the car mentioned previous to yours. When we were at reception & a Nissan mechanic appeared, we asked him 'do you have problems with the turbo on this car'. He replied 'what is it, an X-trail'. That says it all, but the reception staff deny it is a common problem still.

I have a Nissan X-trail 2,2 DcI 2002 year of make. Oil leak was discovered here as well, and was caused by the inter- cooler. The Norwegian dealer told me that a new inter-cooler would cost me £ 1000 + installation that was expected to take an hour +. Through other channels I purchased a new inter-cooler from Germany at 1/3 of the price and installed myself during 15 minutes. No leak problems anymore.

I have had a diesel 2.2 X-Trail since 8th Feb 2005 and after 17000 miles the turbo failed in spectacular form creating a smoke screen on the A3 of "The Fog proportions then dumping oil and water all over the carriageway!

This was replaced by the dealer after a wait of a week getting the part in from Holland.

Now after a further 10,000 miles the turbo has begun to whine. Although drivable, it does turn a few heads!

It has gone back into the dealer and they have confirmed turbo failure again and are now waiting for a new one to come in from Holland again. I am told that when the replacement was done last time, cleaning etc. of other parts should have been done as they have learnt through other failures what to do. I understand that the new unit is a modified one and I should experience no further problems.

I have an 03 X Trail 2.2 diesel. Recently the engine has started stuttering during acceleration, not necessarily from cold either.

I had it serviced 2 weeks ago asking them to investigate. Nothing was found, but the problem is now more frequent.

Any ideas before I take it back to the dealer?

I purchased a x-trail t spec september 04 have had to have a brake kit fitted also e.c.m and boost sensor upgraded which was a nissan recall, also a leak at intercooler which I reported thinking it was oil leak only to be advised that intercooler will have to be ordered and replaced,

luckily my car is still under warranty.

I hope I don't have too many problems as the car has cost me the best part of £23,000 plus as I had steps fitted and tow bar so just under £25,000 I have spent all my savings buying a car I was assured does not have to be in garage for repairs regularly so I will keep my fingers crossed.
