Really poor damp starting.
Gearbox failed.
Radio never worked.
Locks very stiff.
I should've known that spending £350
on a car (even at the age of 20) was
asking for it.
One of the worst cars I've ever owned!
I came out of a decent Cavalier into this French piece of junk as I'd had an accident and couldn't afford the insurance.
It was slow, handled like a double decker bus, the brakes were crap, and the gearbox ended up only working in 2nd and 4th.Bodywork was good though!
At the time it was probably a typical used Renault, I'd say avoid them like the plague, but there probably arn't any left in 2004!
Good job Renault make better motors these days.
Though always the reliability of the Renault 11GTL was questionable, I have one for rough driving and rallying around, which has been off the road now for 2 years, with a little encouragement, always starts! The performance is always 100%, with break-neck acceleration. The only problem with the Renault 11 is trying to get parts, which is almost impossible. Advice for those with Renault 11's would be to take out the starter before it burns out! There is a design fault with them which I discovered only about a week ago which just about saved my starter from burning out; there is a metal guard on the starter, and the bolt holding that on, when tightened, puts preassure on the shaft going through the starter, so either cut the end off the bolt on it, or don't put it on at all! It serves no real purpose. The plate that is over the shaft which gets bent in and puts the pressure on the shaft has to be hammered out too don't forget!! Radix.
I can only agree with the initial review. I had one of these for 2 years and it was a constant problem. Newer Renaults are vastly improved, but I wouldn't recommend any of the older models.
