Stereo (replaced), catalytic converter, muffler.
This is a great first car for kids, because of it's limited power, it may keep kids out of trouble by minimizing burnouts and racing. Plus a child could afford this car, it gets 45-50 mpg, and rarely needs a service, plus the old style engine allows work without going to the shop, nice little project car.
I just bought an 88. #1 piston wasn't firing and only had 75psi. I thought it was valves or rings of course. I pulled the motor and discovered 2 RING PISTONS!, only 1 compression ring. Never have seen this before.. I was a little disappointed that the little 1.0 wasn't boreable due to the thin steel sleeves in the cast motor that were not replaceable.. Also disappointed that the premium motor kit (with 3 ring pistons and new oil pump assembly) was very spendy, $580!!! Everyone was calling this motor a throw away, now I can understand why. Lucky for me that the machine shop told me that standard rings and bearings could be used again.. very hard cylinder linings in this block, with a motor that has 180 miles you could still see the original crosshatching in the cylinders.. I have had my 88 since late 1993. It was my first car and is still my only car. Great little piece of machinery.
I've taken it from Virginia, to Alabama, to Oklahoma, all the way to Germany (where it did nicely on the autobahns) and now to New York. It's had its share of issues, but for a 14 year old car with nearly 200,000 miles on it I'd say its pretty good.
She's a tough little beast that will run and run despite severe engine problems. I once drove it over 1,000 miles with more antifreeze than oil in my crankcase, yet she fixed right on up.
Bottom line: I love my 1988 Sprint, it was my first car, and will always be my favorite.
My name is Brian. I've recently bought a 3 cylinder 1988 sprint. I bought it from a junk yard, for a price of $400.00 I thought I could get it to run, and I did.
The carb needed to be replaced, and it was in need of a tune up. It runs very good. it has 286,000 miles on the original engine. I decided to put the gas mileage to the test. on exactly no gas, I put one gallon of gas into it. I got 39.3 miles to that gallon in town. and in doing the same over, I got 51.7 miles to the gallon on the high way. Since then I've taken the springs completly out and advanced th timing 7 degres. with some jetting tools I bored out the jets and made it mechanicl secondary. Now I have a traction problem.
My 3 banger runs 16.7 in the 1/4 mile. It still gets really good gas mileage. We recently bought a 1988 sprint. We are going to swap a 383 Chevy stroker with a custom frame. we expect to run right around 9 seconds flat. When we are done I will let you know how it goes.
1988 Chevy Sprint.
I bought my little 3 banger from my uncle last year for $100.00. It was sitting on the side of his house for 6 years and he finally let me have it. I bought it because I had a 1974 GM Truck that got 6.2 miles to the gallon.
Because of it sitting so long, just to be safe we completely rebuilt the engine. It passed with flying colors. before I knew it it was on the road and getting 54mpg. I have only had a small problem with the clutch plate, but other than that it's a nice little car.
I just recently upgraded the stereo with a performance CD player, 2 10" subs and a 510 amp.
Direct to the point: I love my sprint and it saves me lots of money! cpoole_2@yahoo.com.
Me and my friend just bought our first sprint at an auction for 25 canadian dollars, we wanna know what problems we should expect, or how we should modify it to perform better, it has been sitting unused for a couple years you can email me if you want at Gdstrwrsfn@yahoo.com.
