Could you be specific about the gearbox fault?

I have had dealings with several Transits - including one with 1/2 a million miles on the clock - and the gearboxes generally last much longer than yours seem to have done.

I agree with your comments, the gearboxes are crap, my one has been out for repairs 4times!! In 40,000km's

Then there's the rust and paint problems, lack of power, (2.3 petrol) 3 clutches and flywheels, various other issues, 3 1/2 years on the vehicle is no better and continuos regular visits to the dealer are the in thing! Worst vehicle I've ever owned!! Ford keep dodging the issues and don't care about unhappy customers with a genuine problem! I will NEVER buy anything with a Ford badge on it again!!! It's a NIGHTMARE owning this VEHICLE!!!

I own a Transit 2002. In this time at 80000km my engine broke up, bad, the distribution belt broke and destroyed the engine: valves, piston, cam shaft-it seized up, they had to replace it.

The new engine has no power, the turbo was changed twice and nothing. The gear box is making a strange noise, and the mecanics say that they cannot repair it. The servo is leaking. The slide door jams a lot. The transmission shaft makes the car vibrate at over 60 miles/hour, etc. The van I had before had 600000km and it ran 10 times beter.

I have owned a 96 transit cab/chassis turbo diesel for the last 12 months, and it had 150,000 km showing on the speedometer.

Has fuel pump problem and ford want $3500 for a new one with only 3 months warranty.

Fuel pumps problems are indicative of turbos so stay away from them.

Otherwise it has been a good truck.

I had a 1997 Transit SWB. Plenty of trouble. I snapped the Shock by throwing it into a bend at 95MPH on the A41.It rolled three times. I have just got out of Hospital and am walking again albeit with a Cane. I did like it though.

Ford transit 90 LWB purchased JUNE 05 Having purchased this van new and read the reviews I have come to the conclusion that fords idea of a reliable van centers on ignoring customer problems This van does not start from cold when it

reaches 1degree cuts out in traffic if heater fan is running Poor build quality A PLASTIC SURROUND ON DRIVER SEAT THAT CATCHES YOUR FOOT ON EXIT.Panel gaps only seen on badly repaired crashed cars misalignment of doors ECT. HOPE TO GET RID OF IT SOON.

1992 Transit 80 SWB 2.5D - owned from new, 265,000 miles on the clock and it's had:

26 routine services

Clutch at 160k

Half a dozen bulbs

Two sets of front suspension bushes

A couple of adjustments on the fuel pump to cure a lumpy tickover.

As dependable as sunrise and sunset. Starts in all weathers, gets me where I want to go and costs peanuts to run.

I have a ford Transit 52, 53 and 54 reg and the 52 has 200 000 miles on it with NO faults so far, 53 has 157 000 miles with only a cracked windscreen which was my own fault, and the 54 has 105 000 on with no faults either, my advice would be to try to change gears more sympathetically because with some vans if you're trying to change gears economically it becomes dificlult for the gearboxes to cope however tough they are.

I have a 99 model transit 2ton flatbed single wheels on rear. when I purchased the car The fuel pump (lucas) went on it... the diesel mechanic told me that this was very common on these models. So $4780 later and with only 3months warranty on a RECONDITIONED pump I had no other options. Ford Australia wanted $7890 which is half of what I paid for the truck. just recently the tensioner bearing inside the timing case retired and nearly left me with bent valves- going to pick it up tommorrow at a cost of $690 au.

The other problem I have is that it seems to run out of legs on the motorway. I'm too scared to drive it at 110km per hour which is the freeway speed in sydney, as I feel that it would explode.

Otherwise its been a good truck. (kind of)

Oh and, theres not much by way of leg room. I'm 6"4, it's a tight squeeze on the passenger side.

You can buy one if you like. at your own risk.

I have two swb transits a 52 and an 03 reg. The gearbox on the 03 has just blown up. Apparently a pinch bolt from the gear selector failed and dropped into the rotating gears. Result an expensive mess. Conversations with BT mechanics have revealed this to be a common problem. And I quote 'O yea we do one a week, we can now change a box in two hours flat'

Perhaps that is why some Renault's are appearing on the BT fleet. What happened to Ford reliability?

Seems my small fleet is going to keep me poor.

Transit 52 plate g needs a new diesel pump. Its only done 40.000 miles. Has anybody had any info from Ford to say if there was a manufacturing problem?

I sent my 54 Plate in for a 45,000 mile service 1 month before the 3 year warranty run out and a knocking noise coming from the engine the response back from the company was that a new fuel injection pump was needed this was covered under warranty.

But as the knocking noise remained and as the oil level was on a minimum and there was no apparent oil leak from the engine or gearbox.

This they had assumed cause damage to the pistons or bearings it would not be covered under my agreement please advise as I am pulling my hair out.

Yeah our company just bought 2004 ford transit,60.000 miles, longwheel base single wheel axle. the first day we drove on the road the rear left half shaft came off the axle. the half shaft complete whith brake drum and wheel flyed yards away from the van. very lucky no injuris. anyway brought the van with recovery truck into garage, checkt the rear hub bearings they were OK, so I drained th gear oil from th diff I opened the back plate at the back of differential and found out that the retain halfmoon circlip did come off the half shaft because the wear on the end tip of drive shaft. so we had to buy new drive shaft after 60.000miles.i was very very supprised so bad engineerig design is on back axle in these whehicles and so dangerous. to find out about the wear on these vans for rear axle just rise the rear axle, no hand brake spin the wheel few time the just grab the wheel and pull ou/push in if more than 3 mm play you gonna be in trouble then if you don't replase the drive shaft...people be carefull there, it did happen to us, don't want to hear to happen to no one else.
