Power Windows not as good as toyota.
Door trim easy drop off.
Dashboard slightly rattling sound came out.
Central / door lock easier damage.
Hydraulic tappet sound.
Seats no like toyota, started to wear, still can use.
Chassis not like toyota, acceptable only.
Among the Proton Wira model, 1.6 and 1.8 model is best in its range. Undercarriage is further more better than 1.3 and 1.5 model. It performing well in cornering and speeding. The problem more or less is come from the accesories like power windows, door, light, dashboard. The manufacturer using low quality material to save cost. Engine and maintenance for 1.6 model quite economical and reasonable if compare to japanese car, spare parts easier to get.
I bought a wira 1.6 auto 1996 manufacture from a friend in 1998 slightly 2yrs 6 moths ever since than I use to service at glandmarie plant for about a year due to all que I decided to service at a private mechanic shop this car roof top is corroded so badly it looks like scrap car I also drive a ford 1987 car there is no corresion at all when I high light the defect to the manufacture no advice nor service given to prevent the corresion how can we be proud to say we are car manufacture sad to say we have to learn
a lot how to manufacture quality car not afforadble car and look into the plight of the consumers given a choice I will never buy local car.
I have a 1997 Proton Wira aeroback 1.6 auto. It's been 7 years now and has not given me any problem. It's a very reliable car.
I agree with the first poster that the engine is good, quiet, A/C is also reliable. Cornering and speeding is also very comfortable with this car. Quite economical use of fuel as well. I can run at 120-180mph without problem. Wiper and engine quiet. 1.6 seats are comfortable as well.
The only problems so far are in the accessories - plastic flaps, etc tend to come off after two-three years. Also overtime there is a gap at the boot. I am also a very "brutal" driver :) and drive it through many potholes and I live in a hilly area.
I am quite impressed with the Wira Aeroback - both its mechanical reliability and its design. Keep it serviced regularly and it will be very good to you.
I have a 1996 wira 1.6 auto aeroback, car is very nice, but the only problem I am facing is the auto gear box. Every 8 months it has to be changed. I have heard that it is not being manufactured and we can get only a reconditioned gear box. I just want to know whether it is true. I cannot afford a new gear box every 8 months which costs 1,800 RM. Please advise me on this.
Hi everyone.. I find this page is very useful for those want to exchange ideas on car problems. I have been using proton wira 1.6XLi aeroback (auto) for past 7 years. Recently (jan. 2006) at 2 occasion while driving, I experience as though engine jammed and released back by itself immedietly. I was lucky it happened at the speed of 60km/h. So nothing happen. My question is what could be cuase? Is it due to gear box problem? I would be grateful if someone could answer me. Thank you very much.
I'm driving Proton Wira 1.6XLi Aeroback (Auto) too. Originally the gearbox use by the car was mitsubishi F4A222 series gearbox with P code behind it which local modify by Proton. F4A222 was very good and fine gearbox, but need to take care a lot to it. Every 15K to 20K mileage you need to change the gear oil, it was recommended using original Mitsubishi Diamond Queen SPIII gear oil rather than proton gear oil. F4A222 was difficult to take care, that's why I change to F4A212 gearbox which was close ratio gearbox to F4A222. F4A212 was use with 4G91 (1.5) DOHC Mirage. It well known reliable. But to use it, fuel consumption might higher a bit, but you got pickup. Overall, Proton Wira 1.6 really not a good car, throttle body always fail, the car sometime suddenly give problem. I really give up to drive it...
I Have wira i.5 Auto The Problem Is My Gear Box Can Usage 1 And 2.. Coz The Gear Box Auto 1.5 Have 3 Gear..
What The Problem my car.. wira Sedan 1998.. 6 Month Usage Ready..

I have a 97 Wira automatic bought from a second hand dealer. As usual, the gearbox had been giving me problems. During acceleration it's almost hesitant to move (someone could walk faster from standstill than in this Wira)...consumption is unbelieveable!!!!
Can I put in a wira 1.6 4-speed gearbox to replace my lousy 3-speed gearbox? Has anyone done this before? Or should I just scarp this and get a 4G91 installed? Please HELP!!!
Thanks.
Just purchase a proton wira mdl 98 and the reason for this is low budget yet economical and useful car. the owner told me that it was not used since june 2006 and when I test drived it I found that the acceleration was OK in all gears, but when I backed up, rattling was experienced the engine shook up. Had a mechanic look for the trouble and said that the transmission needs to be fixed, maybe due to gearing problem Is this true? anyone experienced this problem?
Why the hell did you buy this car, if the transmission shook hard in Reverse on the Test Drive.
Hey, I got a putra 1.8 automatic transmission. it has been giving gear problems lately. the gear is not shifiting from the 3rd onwards and wen it changes it moves freely doesn't engage at all.. feels like its on neutral and once the speed decreases it falls back to the 3rd. from 1 to 3 gears its perfect and smooth, but after the 3rd its screwed up. does ne one know wats wrong cuz different ppl say different things jus wana confirm. most ppl sed that the gear box has to be changed.
Hello, 3 years ago I bought a new Wira SE Automatic transmission. The problem persist a few months ago. When shifting into the D-drive gear, it takes a few seconds for it to engage, somewhat it lags. And a few days ago, the first and second gears feels like hard to engage, somewhat it's in neutral-like gear while moving and it tends to go neutral-like gear after the car come to a complete stop. I just wanted to know how much it would cost for a new Auto Gearbox or to overhaul the gearbox. Any useful info will be appreciated.
Well guess this page is just about kaki proton. I owns a proton 1.6 Xli manual. Nothing great till you experience some modification like, Monroe suspension on front, Waja spring at rear sit (to give a higher looking). The only worst part was the fuel throtter that trigger the AC. I have to get a replacement every 1 year at 2nd hand shop cost RM300. Also the gear it's kind of trouble some. Very noisy. maybe should get some gear speciallist to explain.
I am own proton wira 1.6 xli manual transmission register mid 1997 (almost 10 years). have been used since 2000 when I bought from used car, with expensive price compare to current used car price (rm42000). So far only did 1 time top overhaul due to engine oil leak and I was suprisely during travelling to genting highlands my engine was over heated and engine oil spread out, but nothing bad damaged. The only thing happen because of my rubber radiator cap not in good condition and water vapour out causing my radiator empty. During that time I tought I need another top overhaul, luckily when mechanic did testing around 2 hours, there is no oil leak, not engine damaged. Only replace radiator with new cap. Until now I still managed driving around 200 kmh speed everyday (going to work). Soon I want to install NGV kit since petrol price increase almost every year.
I'm driving a 10 year old aeroback 1.6 XLi. Recently I've been having problems in the morning when the engine is still cold. I can start the engine easily, but when I put the gear into Drive and step on the accelerator, it doesn't move! I can reverse, and the car also moves with the 'L' gear. But not with the 'D' and '2'. Only after 5-10 minutes the 'D' gear works. There is also white smoke coming out from the exhaust.
Is this engine problem or gear box problem? I've changed both engine and auto transmission oil. First one or two days OK, then problem comes back.
The mechanic says there are two separate problems. And that I need to change the gearbox & have an engine overhaul!! RM2000+ and RM4000+!!! Anyone has any ideas??
I am driving Proton Wira 1998 model in Doha, Qatar since year 2004. I am the second owner of the car. I had changed the clutch plate just 5 months before. Recently I had taken my car for Jack Wash and noticed after that I am having difficulties in gear transmission. While driving I find it so difficult to change the gear. What could be the reason? A friend of mine in Doha, told me that the transmission problem could be due to Jack Wash? Is that true? Anyone has got answer? Do I have to now check my gearbox to fix the problem?
