1986 Subaru Brumby GL from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

16th Aug 2000, 00:37

"A car ahead of it's time in 1986"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Water pump died and cooked the engine on the beach.

Brakes failed (were original).

Warped head from the beach incident.

Radiator died.

General comments?

Excellent first car. Four wheel drive makes for unbeatable rally fun (especially for its age and price). Does 160k/hr if you push it.

Excellent.

I think I might buy one for a bit of rally action, thanks.

I really love these brumby utes, me and my mate took one for a drive over the Dunstan Trail in South Island N.Z.

We knew that with 325000 km on the clock it wasn't going to last much longer, that's why we did it as a last drive. At the end of our trek the bullbar fell off, the front bumper fell off, the rear bumper fell off and the sills were all very badly damaged, and it still got us home after a heavy thrashing.

Now 350000km later the thing is still my daily transport.

Verdict, INDESTRUCTIBLE!!!

I'm a fourteen year old Queenslander and I've had my brumby for 2 years my grandad gave it to me because it was not been driven any more I've spent $ 30 and its improved 80% I think I'll keep it as a first car.

Same model 1986; Blown gaskets, warped heads, worn out fuel pump, 590,00kms, original gearbox, and it was Still going.

I have gotten it up to 150kms with ease.

I blew a CV joint going at 130km/h while overtaking and was still able to keep stearing it. I pulled off the road to avoid an accident, then limped it home which was an hour away.

I Have thrashed it round and I learnt manual gear changes in it whilst crunching the gears.

As someone else said, "Indestructible."
