"Could have bought a better car for less money"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Battery was dead right when I bought it.

Needed new heater core.

Emergency brake needed to be fixed.

High beam and other assorted lights

needed to be replaced.

Gas meter went higher with acceleration and went down with braking.

A couple hoses needed to be replaced.

Water valve blew on the way to school.

Tired were mismatched upon purchased.

Car had a problem with starting, replaced spark plugs and wires, distributor cap/rotor, ignition coil, starter, problem still not solved.

Needed O2 sensor.

Engine ran rich or lean I don't know which.

General comments?

This was my first car. I would say it sat as much as I drove it. And I only had it for only 6 months. Heater core was blown when I bought it so there was anti-freeze on the passenger side floor. Needed lights and emergency brake adjusted for inspection.

Every time I thought it was ready to go something else would go wrong with it.

It would stall when I would try to stop so I'd have to be quick about getting it going again in traffic. Never figured out why that would happen.

Engine ran rich or lean, performance was down due to this. Emissions were even worse because of this. Being sensitive to smells I suffered many headaches and dizziness while driving.

Near the end of summer the car just wouldn't start. It would try and try, but just couldn't get going. Even after checking the ignition module and replacing the ignition coil it would still not start all the time. After replacing the starter it would start fine. Then it stopped again.

Car has been a nightmare since I bought it. It ran very little, but when it did it was OK.

The transmission was the only thing that I never had a problem with. Always shifted fine, never kicked or anything.

It sounds like most of the problems you had with this car already existed and were apparent (or should have been) before you purchased it.

Unless you got the car for nothing, why would you buy it with all those problems?

Reply to last comment: I bought the car without knowing the problems. The kid I bought it off of said it ran great. I even had my mechanic take a look and he said it was a good car. Most problems developed over time.

The car had a dead battery and a pool of coolant on the passenger floor, and your mechanic said it was "a good car"?

Find a new mechanic!

Most of the problems you describe are simply maintenance items. If the car was in good general condition, with respect to body and drive train, then those few items would not be an issue. This particular model of Camaro is very rare, well worth spending a little money on. Personaly I'd love to know where it is now, I could use the parts.

The 1987 Camaro LT was not really a separate model, it was just the base model with one or more LT option packages.

It replaced the Berlinetta, which was a secretary's (or, as they say in the UK, a hairdresser's) car if there ever was one!

I have my LT since 93 and it has 140,000 miles on it and it is the best car I have ever owned. Bought and sold 5 cars since and it will say continue to stay in my collection.

This is not a very useful review of the 1987 Camaro - it appears from your review that the car had very high mileage (150000 miles) and from your description the car was in very poor condition when you purchased it, perhaps reflecting a lack of maintenance by the previous owner (s), and perhaps reinforcing the important fact that when you purchase an old, high mileage car you should have it checked out by a competent mechanic before you buy it.

If I went to the junkyard and purchased a ruined car, I could hardly complain that it didn't run well. Why would anyone buy a car with obvious mechanical faults (failed heater core leaking coolant on the passenger side floor, dead battery, etc) and then complain about them? You could certainly have checked that the emergency brake and lights worked before purchasing the car. This doesn't make sense and isn't a useful review of the 1987 Camaro model in general.
