2002 Chevrolet Malibu from North America - Comments

"Very bad quality for the price, should have bought a Toyota!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

My turn signals began not working all of the time at 32,000 miles. I had the Chevy dealer check it at this time and they of course worked while I was at the dealership. Then about 36,000 miles the turn signals only worked 25% of the time. I have checked the fuse and changed the flasher. Does anyone know what can repair this prblem? The dealership told me electrical work can cost 500-1000 dollars depending what the problem is. I have heard this a common problem for Malibu's. Now I need a new inspection sticker, and the turn signals and hazards won't work. I bought this car new and have only had working turn signals 25% of this past year! I won't, but another one!

General comments?

I believe your turn signal is problem, actually a recall, happened on my 2001 Grand Am. Brought the car in and dealer fixed free of charge, I don't know what it is however, maybe try to read GrandAM reviews years 99-2002 and see. Hopefully your problem gets fixed Before it gets worse. Take Care.

Nick.

So did you ever dump the Chevy for a Toyota?

We have the intermittent turn indicator problem as well. What works for a temporary fix is to put on the emergency flashers for a few minutes. Turn the flasher off and the turn indicators again work for a short period. It is no way to drive safely, but short of a permanent fix what else is there. By the way all bulbs, fuses, and the flasher have already been replaced once. This has been the only problem we have had with the car to this point.

You probably have a short in your blinker switch. I have a Lumina that is similar to the Malibu in some aspects. I have had the same problem twice. Both times it was the blinker switch.

I too have a 2002 Malibu LS, my turn signals and brake light (only driver side) work when they want to pretty much.

I noticed that the trick with the hazard lights does work up until a point and then its just a pain in the rear.

I'm taking the Malibu in for a coolant leak I have suddenly.

I noted on GM's site that none of these have been recalled, yet in all previous years up until 2002 they had recalled the Malibus' for these issues. Mostly electrical issues.

GM how many irritated people do you need??

I am glad to have found this site. I have a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. In 2004 I began having the coolant leaking problem. It stopped on its own after 8 months.

I have been having the same problem with my blinkers also. The recalls for both these problems end at 2001.

This was my second and definitely my last Chevy.
