2000 Audi TT Quattro Roadster from North America - Comments

"Could have been a great car.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine was blowing blue smoke out the exhaust at 5,000 miles, they replaced the engine at 20,000 miles.

Shift fork fell into the transmission at 30,000, I had to pay $12,000 for the repair.

Color on the baseball glove interior wore off the shifter (replaced 3 times) and the steering wheel.

Both doors rattle like they are half open and they could never fix it.

Gas gauge went out 4 times and 4 new gauge clusters were installed, plus sensors in the tank.

The switch for the gas tank door was replaced 4 times.

The rear view mirror was replaced 2 times.

Experienced "loss of power" issue, which couldn't be diagnosed, until the coil recall.

Issues with rear suspension noise required repairs.

CD player locks up, "error 3", and could not be diagnosed.

Issues with ESP (warning light is always on) can't be resolved.

Issues with "Check Engine" light can't be resolved.

General comments?

If the battery dies, you need the screw driver (in the trunk) to access the manual release for the trunk.

If you get a flat, the flat tire won't fix in the trunk.

Most electrical service issues recurred over and over (4 to 5 times).

Most mechanical issues (engine and trans failures) were not able to be diagnosed or repaired in any reasonable manner. The car blew blue smoke from 5,000 to 20,000 miles while the dealer that sold it to me refused to acknowledge that there was an issue and told me that it was "normal" for the car to burn a quart of oil every 1000 miles, then 500 miles, then 250 miles. I got another dealer to replace the engine at 20,000 miles. I complained about "grinding" of the sychro gears between 1st and 2nd for 2 years. When the shift fork for the 1st to 2nd gear synchro fell into the trans and destroyed it at 30,000 miles, I was told the one of the dealerships service technicians had seen me "racing" the car at some "event" and that they were not going to repair it (this was before they looked at it). They charged me $1000, stole my custom antenna (they said the car had been inside their shop the whole time they had it. They ripped the trans out, charged me $1000 and gave it back to me in boxes (with several parts missing). This was typical of the service I received. My out of pocket expenses to keep this car running have been over $15,000.

In the first 2 years this car was in the shop 180 days. So far, it has been out of service a total of around 300 days. Audi USA would not do anything to help me and stated that the dealer's decision is final on all warranty issues (except for 1 "Customer Advocate" who told me to get a lawyer if I wanted to get any satisfaction).

Is this for real?

The dealer must've had a good reason not to honor the warranty.

They would've actually made more money had they honored it.

You beat on the car, don't you?

Probably not. It's a sports coupe anyway. It's supposed to be driven hard, or at least it's not supposed to fall apart if driven hard.

I've had some of the electrical challenges described above. Still, I haven't had nearly the same degree of challenges. You got a lemon and I wouldn't classify your experience as typical.

I'm not surprised by what I've heard here. I have been having the same problems with Audi dealerships (not in the USA, but in Spain). I have had several Audi's over the last 12 years and my last was a new A8 4.2. I have had so many problems and the dealerships don't care. The first year the car was in the garage for 6 months to fix a radio problem! They stripped the whole interior of the car because they didn't want to replace the main unit! My car has so many problems now that I can't drive it, and they can't fix it. I have a 30000€ car that doesn't move, I can't sell it and Audi Spain, Audi UK and the main office in Germany doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. I think its time I change my make of car!!

I have an Audi TT, bought in 2001 brand new. While in California, the car was fine. I moved to Tennessee and started taking it in for service. I have now have had the exact same problems as you described, except for mileage. My car now has 78000 miles on it, and now it is back in the shop, because apparently my shift fork is broken. Audi told me $7500 easy to fix. I took it to a reputable transmission place, who are replacing the shift fork and a detent. AUDI obviously full of crap, cause I had complained about a grinding sensation between gears 1 and 2, which was put on my record in case I had future problems... this was around 54000 miles... they originally gave me an extra 12000 warranty because I told AUDI USA my car was too new to be spending so much time in the shop. However it is now out of warranty. so now they want nothing to do with it. this bites... but I have been assured I do not need to replace an entire transmission. I will come back and let you guys know how much it will cost to fix. hopefully nowhere near anything anyone told me. Oh by the way Mr. Transmission said they could only replace the transmission for only 6500, or I could get it rebuilt for $4300. anyway, I love the car, and yes it is a sports car and needs to be driven hard. a transmission, especially a manual should not go bad, anywhere before 500,000 miles... the clutch should go well before anything... beautiful car, big frikkin lemon.

Agree with all comments. Beautiful German designed car, horrible Hungarian built car. Audi service even worse because somehow it's always your fault or they have never seen this problem before so again it's your fault.

I've had most of these problems including:

* Blown clutch at 4K miles (told my fault - $2K)

* Drainage system non-functional (told my fault - was advised to "not park under trees")

* Computer non-functional twice (replaced under warranty - even they couldn't find a way to blame on me)

* Headlights filled with water (told my fault - fixed under warranty after long drawn out fight)

* Windscreen non-functional (cable broke - somehow my fault - $1K)

* Windshield jet dongle "fell off" after service appt (somehow my fault - $400)

* Audi service appts either breaking something or not performing whole service - was stuck on side of the road with a problem that was not fixed during service appt - service rep said "good luck lady" and hung up on me.

I have spoken with Audi of America along with the dealers. Audi of America told me they could not do anything and dealer word final. Dealers said they would look into my issues and never called me back.

On and on and on. My husband is in love with the new Audi's and we have to buy a new car. I told him we would buy an Audi over my dead body.

That does not surprise me at all. I am having issues with the dealership. The Customer Care Advocate also told me her hands were tied and that I should contact a lawyer.

So people, I am looking at an Audi TT 1.8 (2000) 57K miles, 1 owner, manual for $11k. Should I venture?... honestly... they look so beautiful...

I bought my Audi TT last August and the first problem was the leaking roof. The battery went flat when I was on holiday so consequently the radio/CD player needs to be rebooted, but when I checked the manual for pin-code the last owner had removed it. Audi have no record of this code so the car has to go into garage to be reloaded. The rear windscreen shattered and I am being quoted £3.5k for a new roof because they say they cannot replace the windscreens without that? Anybody experienced this before? I find this extremely bizarre and am not surprised the insurance premiums are so high in UK when there is obviously a design fault with some convertibles. My dealer assured me when I bought the car that windscreens weren't a problem to be replaced. Any ideas or advice? thanks.
