1999 Ford Ranger XLT from North America - Comments

"My Ranger was a work horse that took plenty of abuse, but is still going strong to this day"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

At 70000 miles a fuse went out that controlled the 4x4 system, easy fix.

At 98000 miles the parking brake got stuck on, the dealer said it was rusted shut due to only using it once every 2 years. I was satisfied with the explanation.

Oh yeah, other people list this as a problem, but free tires at 66000 miles from Ford for the wilderness AT recall was a blessing.

General comments?

I Drove this truck through college, and I drove it hard. 60 mile a day round trip to my summer work and a long distance relationship helped pile the miles up.

Being in college and the RANGER being my first vehicle I owned, I slacked on all maintenance and it kept going.

On 2 different occasions I drove the vehicle through a 2 state snow/ice storm in 4x4 (over 250 miles) and nothing has ever failed.

Downsides, no cruise control! (my fault) and its kind of noisy at high speeds, otherwise nothing. It took my abuse from 18600 miles to 90000 miles, now my sister owns it and has had no troubles to 110000.

I purchased my ford Ranger xlt 4x4 with 110 miles on it.

My investment was 5000.00.The 4.0 Engine is quite powerful and makes it fun to drive, fast off the line. I have noticed the hard (clank) upon acceleration from a stop and will try the aluminum drive shaft that has been a recommended fix. My Ranger came with a 4" lift I assume it was used off road. I had to replace the spider gear butI still feel as tho this is a bargain as the new Rangers are priced at least 20 thousand more than this one even with added expensive of rear end repairs. I am also impressed with the amount of room inside. I am 6' 220 and I am comfortable driving this vehicle. I use my truck for construction work so I added air bags to my suspension. this allows me a much better payload and well worth the 400.00 investment. Overall I would highly recommend the truck to anyone who asked.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT Super-cab. I bought it new with 7 miles on it. It now has over 222000 miles on it and nothing has been done to it besides replacing the clutch and slave cylinder at about 110000 miles, and a few emissions components along the way. It still runs and drives very well.
