4WD High went at 51,000m resulted in the transfer case being rebuilt ($1100).
3 out of 4 shocks leaked at 70,000m and were replaced.
Both rear axle seals leaked onto brake pads and had to have bearing/seal kit installed and brakes/Emergency brakes replaced. Rear axle shaft bearing blew 20m from shop and axle shaft needed to be replaced (mechanics fault) ($1200).
Water pump replaced at 80,000m ($360)
Inner/outer Tie rod replaced at 95,000 ($280).
Front axle whines, transfer case growls and has play in it.
Front axle is leaking, rear and from main seals are leaking.
Have to have PCV and oil filler cap cleaned once a week in cold weather because of sludge (known issue).
Front rotors need to be turned every 6,000m.
TPS replaced at 114,000m ($160).
Paint is pealing off of rear bumper and Jeep emblems ($500 estimate).
Now it's in the shop with a blown head-gasket with 115,000 miles ($1500).
Mechanics are clueless on this machine, if it doesn't have an error code, they can't fix it. It doesn't matter if its jeep or a general mechanic). Every-time something breaks, it costs over $300 to fix it.
Lots of power and is fun to drive.
Suspension starts to rattle at 100,000 miles.
Fuel economy is reasonable for a V8. Vehicle is sharp looking and comfortable.
Lots of features to play with.
Love the heated seats in Maine.
Sadly I agree. I love my jeep. It is so sharp looking and handles flawlessly in the snow. I have the Limited with Quadra Track II. I need to flip it our to someone before I get more $$ into it.
In 18 months I fixed/replaced
:
All 4 door actuators.
4 tires.
Idle Air Control Valve.
Serpentine belt (so what)
It keep throwing a code for bad injector #4.
I am going to miss it.
Similar problems with my Jeep.
Love the look of vehicle, but lots of costly maintenance.
Reliability an issue - waiting to see what will malfunction next.
I am currently selling vehicle.
I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee brand new in 2000. After the 36,000 mile warranty ran out... the problems kicked-in.
I have 73,000 miles on it and was hoping to get a lot more, but not with the problems I have had...I'm very nervous... what will go next! So far I have had all 4 of the locks replaced (sounds like I'm not the only one!), problems with transfer case and 4 Wheel drive at 42,000, water pump at 54,000, tie-rod 68,000, all new brakes and now they found a leaking seal... will cost around $400. And I have heard that there's been lots of transmission problems with these vehicles... my mechanic told me that the auctions have signs posted that they do not have any warranty with them. I disappointed because I love the comfort and look of the vehicle, but I could do without the costs and hassle of repairs. I've usually gotten 150K out of all my previous vehicles without any major repairs... not this one. I'm looking to unload it now before anything else goes wrong.
I want to follow up on my survey and let you all know that I had to replace the radiator again because it was blocked and both tie rods in order for it to pass inspection. It cost $500 this time. One of the door guides broke and if I have the light switch set to auto my lights will flick on and off depending on the bump I hit. I am also hearing load rattling coming from the rear on bumps as well. Rotors are still being turned ever 8,000 miles. Now I am only getting 16 MPG, I was getting 19 before the head gasket went. I am on a mission now to keep it until it gets paid off, then I will web cast me crushing it live on the web with an excavator.
My 2000 Grand Cherokee is the second one I have owned. Unfortunately, it will be my last. I have replaced all four door locks and now have to replace one of the rear ones again. I have been locked inside my car and hod to crawl out the back hatch. (no easy feat) I scares me to think of all the brake problems and those yet to come. I have 62,000 miles on my car and have always maintained it. When my extended coverage is up at 70,000 I will be time to get rid of it. I like the 4-wheel drive and the looks of the car, but the overall sense of security is gone.
I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee which I purchased in 2002 with 24000 miles. So far I have replaced all 4 door lock actuators, both real axle seals, sway bar bushings, 4 shocks, and the transmission speed sensor. It needs a 4 wheel break job now too.
I feel fortunate as I currently have 110,000 miles on it now. I do however change the oil, transmission, and differential fluid regularly. Maybe that's why I have not had too many problems with it.
I hope to keep it another 2 years (fingers crossed).
Oh, now I am sad. I had a 1998 Nissan Altima and loved it, but it hit a deer and was totaled. So, I bought the 200 grand cherokee and had the dealership fix the transmission leak right away, got a new serpentine belt. I drove it to Colorado and there was low coolant, which a guy filled up for free and said there didn't look like any leaks or problems, but a flush is good at 90k or 100k. Then, just about a week ago after I get back from Colorado, this rattling in the back starts. I took to a tire place and they said there are no leaks. It happens over bumps in the road and is definitely coming from back. They don't know what it is. One friend of mine said she had something similar and cost her $1700. I am hoping this is not the case. I drive about 3000 miles a month. Iowa Girl
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Purchased it in July 2003 and had dealership immediately fix 4-wheel drive which was stripped. No cost to me. Now the heat vent on the passenger side has gone out along with the heated seat on the passenger side. I also just replaced the rotors. Now I have a noise under the hood that I was told is manifold related. I am at 102,000 miles and the car is paid off and I drive for work. Feeling a bit bummed. I too love the look and drive of the vehicle, but it is pricey to replace the many things that go wrong. Wonder what dealer will tell me on Monday?? Was hoping to drive the car for another few years. We'll see. By the way, cost to replace heat vent $1500 and cost to replace heated seat $1500. Someone forgot to tell me I hit the lotto.
I bought my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in January 2005. It had around 52K on it. No problems with it until April 2006 when I had to replace the water pump since it had a crack. Maine has harsh winters though, and the shop I took it to said that was probably the cause. At that time I also had the brakes replaced since they were getting close to the end of their lifespan. Better off fixing them before it starts affecting the rotors. Total for that all that: just under $500, and I believe that was with the oil change.
A few months back I was getting a single 'clunk' sound when turning left after moving to Virginia (I swear, every parking lot down here has a speed bump every 10 feet). I took it to the shop today and it turns out I have a bad tie rod. Part, labor, and alignment (which needs to be done for it to be fixed properly) : ~$260.
I've put a lot less money into this vehicle in the almost 2 years I've owned it than my last car. Any vehicle that's 6 years old is going to have basic wear and tear. I love my Jeep; it's an absolute tank of a vehicle. I will never own another brand!
I bought my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee new off the lot. It had 3 miles on it. I've had numerous problems with it. I've replaced two window motors. My front door lock makes a horrible noise when trying to lock the door. It locks, but will not unlock. I've just replaced the front brakes and my first set of rotors. I replaced the back breaks years ago and had to do something with the rear seal. Within the past six months I've replaced the high speed sensor which makes your engine wind up before it shifts out of a certain gear. Well now it is doing the winding again. That was $230 the last time I had it fixed. However, I took it in before the sensor broke and they put it on the machine and it showed nothing wrong. The shop said they had never seen a sensor break. Now they tell me that we can't do anything until it breaks again. Why do they not figure out what caused it to break before fixing it and costing me another $230? I love my Jeep and it will be paid off in a couple months. I've put too much into this vehicle to get rid of it now, but I have a small child and do not want to get stranded. I'm not sure how reliable it is now.
My 2000 Grand Cherokee has 110,000 miles on it, bought new. I have replaced 1 rear door actuator, 1 rear passenger power window motor, 1 speed sensor. I would not trade this vehicle for anything! I currently have an engine warning on (happened today) another speed sensor! (shifts badly). I will replace it and continue to drive it feeling safe and confident in it's durability and performance.
Well,
I'm back... I was the original poster. I now have 141,000 miles, had to replace the radiator) yet a third time and now when I turn right I hear a honking noise coming from the steering wheel. The body is starting to rust, the hood shocks are gone and I'm still fighting with the rotors. I am also replacing the batter because of a load test failure. AWD is kind of flaky right now and doesn't work like it should.
Maybe y'all should buy an older one?
I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee with 190K on it. I bought it brand spanking new and aside from the typical items, nothing has failed me on this yet. Who knows, maybe I got a good one?
I am currently replacing the seal between the transfer case and transmission, which led me to this site, so I wanted to put my .02 worth. I have pictures of me driving this thru water half way up the doors as well, and in the snow, with mud tires, it can't be beat.
I have a 2002 GC Limited V8 QD and currently have 67,000 miles on it. So far I have had a transmission shift sensor failure and air conditioner failure. Both repairs were minor and covered by warranty. Had the vehicle up on the rack last week and noticed that it has a rear axle seal leaking and a rear shock leaking.
Absolutely love this vehicle and hope I do not have the problems many of you have had with the 2000 model year. Fingers are crossed!
Wow... scary. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee, 4wd, 4.7 V8, (loaded - has almost all limited options, tow package). It now has 81,000 miles on it. I replaced all 4 shocks at 75k (normal, I would think), replaced rotors, pads and drained / renewed brake fluid at the same time (2nd set of rotors). Rear sway bar bushings / links need to be replaced (about $50 - I'll do it myself). That's it. I would consider all of it normal maintenance for the miles on the car. This jeep tows a 2000 lb race car all over the northeast US all summer every summer. Transmission fluid / filters get replaced each season because of the loads, oil every 4 - 5k miles. Can't complain, gang.
