"A true SPORTS car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing so far.

Except when I hit a curb in a bad rain storm and bent the lower control arm and sway bar. My only complaint is that the control arms are really flimsy. They are a poor design. Honda's have beefier arms than the starion.

I make my living as Auto Technician so I maintenain me cars to the highest standards. I'm sure that's plays a factor in the performance of my cars, but doing regular maintnance has proved to be very effective in avoiding any complications. Waiting until something breaks is not the way to preserve your car, no matter what make/model it is.

General comments?

I have owned many staquest and I loved everyone of them. I only sold them because friends wanted them and I had other for myself.

If these cars are maintained they will last. Waiting for things to break only lead to more problems. My modo is "CHANGE IT NOW OR PAY DOUBLE LATER"

I can state, as a fact, that the Starion/Conquest, with a simply an exhaust upgrade, will beat any stock mustang out there.

They are very fast and with many mods available can be even faster. Make smart upgrades, and for a reasonable cost, you can have a very reliable, very fast "street-able" everyday car. That can only be said about a small group of cars out there.

If you're a true car enthusiast, as a star-quest owners, we can create a very unique, very competitive street machine without spending $30k on a new car that are one OF a million. Learning everything you can about these cars is all you have to do to keep these cars alive. Keep those turbos spooling. Drive your Starquest Proud. We are owners of a dieing breed.

Yeah, they're a "dieing breed" all right. They did not sell all that well when new, they were not considered particularly worth keeping up, so there are not many left around now.

Not going to bother arguing whether a Starion is a sports car or not, nor whether an exhaust upgrade would allow it to "beat any stock Mustang" as the reviewer would not listen anyway.

In response to the first comment: I've never owned either car, but I rode in a Starion for approximately 1 hour years ago, and I much preferred it over any Mustang or Camaro I'd ever ridden in. For one thing, there was ROOM in the Starion, and loads of creature comforts that ALL worked. The driver and I had a huge time in our 1 hour with this car. Bravo Mitsubishi and Chrysler!

Well I own a starion, i have also owned a few other turbo charged cars before and the starion is by far the best yet very quick for a small turbo and gets on boost very early around 2000 rpm. And in reply to the first comment if by any chance the mustang is close to a 5L vt ss holden commodore than yes the starion is quicker with a few minnor upgrades. Thank you for your time.

I'm sure a starion with an exhaust is not beating an 05 mustang GT, 96-01 mustang Cobra, and is without a doubt not beating an 03-04 cobra.

Get your facts straight.

Haha, he did say "Mustang" and nothing about "GT or Cobra".

My roommate had an 88 Conquest with 80k original one owner miles - ATX, but he was always having terrible trouble with various devices especially spark control and idle.

I am considering purchasing a starion that is what led me here. Great cars - real sexy and perfect seating/comfort IMO.

Well I have owned in the past a well respected 1982 Camaro z28 with its huge 350 engine, also in 1989 I had a brand spanking new mustang Gt 5.0L (NOTE 1989 IS when Mustang was still respected as a sports car) and at the same time my dad bought a brand new conquest TSI, And by no means were the Mustang, or the Camaro any wher close to the Conquest TSI, not in comfort, or speed. It was very funny and at the same time sad that my old man would kick my rear end with a much much smaller displacement engine, at that time I was dissapointed of the american so called mussle cars, or more I would say gas hoggs!! ever since the I have had much respect for imports, and specialy for the STAR/QUEST I was really sad to learn that 1989 would be the last year for their production, but it is amazing that to this date they still are beating the crap out of many cars out ther today!!

I currently own an 86 Starion and I can say from experience that not many cars out there can beat me. Let alone mustangs. I have a few mods that put 317 HP to the pavement.

I had 2 86 starions. I raced several mustangs and spanked their "good ole boy" mudflaps off their rear end. I could beat vette's usually, I even got past a 911 once. One of the starions I was cosmetically challenged. This car looked terrible, but ran like a top. It was funny to see the guys in a shiney brand new mustang get beat by a "beater."

Now that I think about it, I was spanked by a CJ5 at the soplight one day... that guy nearly popped a wheelie taking off, I was amazed and almost couldn't catch up to him to give him a thumbs up. Go Jeep!!

The bottom line for the Star/Quest vehicle is that, they're a "KEEPER" collection, or preserve one or two...

I regret to say I had one, but I sold it to a Star/Quest beliver, he assure that he will keep it in top shape and add a little mod to it.

When I get back from overseas duty, I will definately will look for one and keep it until I die on this planet...

I have an 87 Starion that I have been restoring since April of 2005 - it has 140k on the original motor, and after MANY hours of work and TLC, it is looking great now. I have an aftermarket 3" exhaust from the turbo back, a manual boost controller on the stock turbo pushing 15 lbs, and some higher flowing injectors... Chromed hard pipes, ovcp, bov, etc... I am able to keep pace with brand new 2005 Mustang GT's (and sometimes depending on my launch, beat them by a car or two). One of my co-workers has an 05 Mustang GT and we sometimes go at it on the way home. When I first got my Starion, he would walk me - easily, not even close. But as I started getting her running right and did some minor mods, now he cannot pull away at all, and if we go from a roll, I can take him by a car or two in a half mile stretch.

And sitting at home ready to be installed is a 19C turbo - that is almost double the air flow as the stock 12A. When I install that baby at 18 - 20 lbs of boost, he won't even stand a chance.

So for one of the most unique looking cars on the road that are chuck full of performance potential, this is definitely once of my favs!

I've had my Conquest TSI for a year, and I could beat most Mustangs and spank Z28s, but the SS and Saleen give me problems.

You guys are full of it!I had a 88 Starion and many Stangs and no way it beats a 87-93 Mustang 5.0 let alone the newer 99's and above stop fooling yourselves please!

We are not fooling ourselves, jump in one. Case in point, a friend working at a local Mitsu dealership selling parts had a late 90s Stang GT. He sold after I whipped him about three car lengths from light to light. My car was a 1988 Starion ESI-R stock. Also it is a four cylinder beating an eight cylinder. For those in denial, I feel your pain.

I have 3 mentioned sitting in my garage. an 87gt, 99' Cobra n/a, and an 88tsi.

My 87 is bone stock with 40k miles on it an looks like it just sits in the garage (which it does).

Cobra has long tubes, x-pipe, 3" catback, cai, reflashed comp.

Tsi just has downpipe, no cat, 2 1/2" catback w/greddy muffler.

There isn't much of a comparison between my 87gt an my Tsi. Takeoff the GT has more torque, but it will only jump the Tsi for about a half car length before the Tsi up an takes off.

Cobra, it walks away from the Tsi fairly easy, but not by a lot. The Tsi kind of jumps it a little off the line then it's all over once the Cobra catches an passes it.

Again it could all be in the driver. Me an my friends loaded them all up an went to the track one night.

I've owned around 10 of these cars and have ridden in more

most are quick few are fast. I am preparring a letter to MMC OF AMERICA to see if they could bring back the beloved starion/conquest and use both mitsu & crysler powerplants from 2.0L up to the 6.1L hemi. they keep the weight between 2800-3200#'s fully loaded. this car would have so much competition (most would be easily beaten) not only from the USA big 3 but from japan, europe, austrailia. all MMC needs to do is combine the 3000gt/starion body lines & interior to end up with the S-4

Starion-4th gen. use either MBZ 7 spd auto or 6 spd man.

Pricing from 19,675-45,000. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AN 09 PROTOTYPE...
