1998 Vauxhall Vectra GSi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Great fun to drive, very quick with excellent handling"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gearbox - 5th gear synchromesh replaced after 40,000 miles (mostly on motorways/dual carriageways).

Door speakers - blown lots of times.

General comments?

Very quick car, excellent handling, but somewhat heavy on the fuel if you go out and enjoy yourself.

Took it onto a high speed handling course and was very impressed by what you could do with it. eg. It will quite happily go round 90 degree bends at 60 mph with a predictable understeer, that was easily fixed with a bit of lift off oversteer. Can easily cope with emergency lane changes at 100mph, and I managed to get 142mph top speed before running out of runway!!

Big problems with the gearbox though - out of eight GSi drivers that I know, 7 have had some sort of problem with the box, ranging from difficult changes to entire gearbox replacements.

Quite agree. I have the estate, and it's a great car.

One front speaker has blown and was replaced under warranty, and the front Recaro seat side bolsters creak slightly when sat on. No other faults so far though. Mine is 11 months old and has covered 16,000 miles.

Indicated 152 mph on a German Autobahn after a long run - didn't start to run out of puff until over 140 mph, which was very easily attained.

Easily the best handling powerful front wheel drive car I have driven, with great steering feedback. Grip levels huge, too, though the front Yokohamas only lasted 13,000 miles.

Would happily buy another, if it were available. Hopefully the reason that it currently isn't is because it will be replaced by a three litre variant!
