"Potentially a fabulous car spoiled by the ride quality"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alarming clunks from gearbox when accelerating from standstill. This was eventually cured by a recall which re-programmed the software controlling the gear changes.

Stitching on seat squab came apart at seam.

Vanity light on passenger sun visor didn't work.

General comments?

Classic looks and classy interior albeit a little tight for space.

The turbine like power available is just fabulous.

The gearbox since re-programming is good, but I still get the occasional clonk. For super fast response sport mode is required, but this mode tends to result in less smooth down changes.

Handling and ride has deteriorated and is currently causing great concern.

Update by writer of this review: Discussions about the handling and ride characteristics have highlighted the issue of tyre pressures. Jaguar advise 28/32 psi under 100mph and higher pressures over 100mph. I have always run the lower pressures and this has caused all four tyres to wear on their edges which has adversly affected the ride and handling. Three dealers have told me to always run on 36/40 psi and ignore the handbook pressures. I have renewed all four tyres and with the higher pressures the drive is much improved although at normal UK motorway speeds of 70-90 mph the car feels light on the steering and does not inspire the confidence that you enjoy with a 5 series BMW. I have to say that although I appreciate many aspects of the car every time we go on a long journey there is always criticism at some point of the way the car rides. It responds really badly to poor road surfaces which I know is in part due to the low profile tyres, but with the S Type R it jangles the nerves.
