"160 bhp"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Minor niggles.

General comments?

As standard this car has great performance when being thrashed from low gears upwards beating many 2.5 litre cars and almost all hot hatches you will encounter. However get caught under 85 mph in top

and most things will keep with you until 90 when the thing wakes up in that gear.

My car's standard 120 bhp has been increased to 160 without the need for a stupid big exhaust, will reach 60 in 6.5 seconds and go on to 140mph. Most amusing for destroying bazed-up nova's and 95% of cars on the road.

A 106 will only do 140mph on the limiter in 5th if it is running by means of forced induction. This is assuming it does only have 160bhp. I very much doubt that 140mph will ever be seen by this car if it is normally aspirated with only 160bhp!!

106s are cracking cars. Put the right gear box in and you get rid of the minor niggles such as 'no-go in 5th' and the horrible loss of revs from the 1st to 2nd gear change. They are definitely the nearest thing to a 205, but much more refined.

You may be wrong here.

The GTi hits the limiter at about 7400rpm. Even without any mods, mine can easily reach 6500rpm in 5th. An extra 40bhp (mostly at the top end) will ensure that 140mph is available.

What kind of modifications have been done to bring up the engine to about 160hp?

My 106 GTi is standard (120 bhp) apart from a jetex induction kit and -50 lowered and I've been at 127 mph, so I'm sure an extra 40bhp could add the 13 mph!

I own a normal 106 S16 which is the same as the GTi, I've got up to 125 mph, and the car can definitely go more.

My 106 GTi will do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds and I have had 135mph out of it. The only visible modification is the Magnex full system. I bought the car as it is so don't know if any engine mods have been carried out although I don't think the engine itself is standard.

The only problem I have with the 106 is that it has a tiny bit of a flat spot when in the low rev range, but once you hit 3000rpm it flies. As for the 106 GTi having no-go in 5th, I don't know what's wrong with your 106 because mine feels like it needs a sixth gear. The pull in 5th is excellent and most people think I am in 4th and they can't believe it when they see otherwise.

To the person who submitted the original message, do you still have the car, and what colour was it?

Hi, I have just bought my 106 GTi and went on a business trip to Leeds. On the M1 I decided to give it some gas and was very impressed. The top speed that I got from the car was 137 MPH, and that is on a standard 106. I'm sure that the car will get to 140 if I didn't bottle it LOL.

I'll keep you posted. Happy driving.

Hi.

Greetings from Denmark, where Peugeot is popular also, especially the 106. My 106 GTI has also been beefed up to 160 HP using racing cams, a ram-type intake funnel (from French cup-racing) with a KN filter. The oil-level is exactly in the middle between max and min (check when cold, you get 10 HP by doing this as opposed to being on max). I have 16" wheels and no lowering so the car to runs out of steam at about 6500 RPM in 5th. With the larger circumference of the 16" wheels however, it's doing about 135 MPH. So I guess with 6% error on the meter and smaller wheels, you've got 140 MPH on the clock. If you don't run it hard when cold and don't slam the gears from higher to lower, you've got great reliability as well. Mine is 4+ years and original.

OK guys, I don't want to discourage you, but if the speeds you are giving are the ones you read on the speedo then I'm afraid you are all wrong. A speedo looses it's accuracy below 20mph and above 80mph. You can get at least 10% inaccuracy. Well you do the Math.Cheers.

Hi all.

Well, I am in the process in buying a 106 GTi and so far, all the comments I've heard about the car are good except for a few niggles.

Just a quick note though, If you have a larger diameter Alloy it WILL increase your top end speed, and a smaller diameter alloy will increase your 0 - 60 time. But there are a few exceptions.

Cheers

I bought my 106 gti which I later sold (I now have an Audi RS4 - pose! pose!) and felt it was quite superb in terms of handling and performance. However the bodywork is made of cheap baked bean tins I think. Anyway it was too slow so I took it to LAD motorsport (they are on the web) for a 160bhp conversion. The car had revised induction, lowered suspension and gas-flowed head. Top marks, just induction roar if you booted it, but otherwise no stupid go faster exhaust that makes more noise than the engine. Very good little car, but storage space is limited and depreciation makes them a better second hand purchase than new.

I've just bought a 106 GTI last week and its supurb. I don't know about you lot, but who cares how fast they go!! it's a great car with brill handling, acceleration and its easily 1 of if not the best looking and well finished hot hatches around. and it's easily modded. Its by far best car I've had to date.

I have ordered a new 106 GTi which I get in a couple of days. I am impressed with the comments so far, especially the handling aspect. I have a question regarding the brakes and the interior. Should the seats come in leather, half-leather or just normal seats. Mine is just the normal material although I was told all 106GTi's came with leather. Another question is if the 2002 model comes standard with ABS. please reply to soupy_2@hotmail.com.

Ps keep up the good site.
