2000 Chevrolet Impala Ex-Police from North America - Comments

"Family sedan, but hot pepper"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Battery was discharged once overnight without known reason.

Rear ammos changed right after safety certification.

Water is leaking during rainy days. It falls to the front passenger floor through the heater unit.

General comments?

For seven thousands Canadian dollars it was the best. Fuel economy is great compare to the engine size. Plus it runs on regular gas. Police package is useful for heavy commuting. Excellent on highways and rough roads. Good internal size for big guys. Basic car with big engine. Winter tires will be very reasonable option for snow. With regular tires it is difficult to control if snow is getting deep. Some time will generate Check Engine alarms. Easy to cancel with standard radio. Good acoustics for basic radio. Good sensitivity for AM/FM. Painting quality is not really good. Looks like they forgot to put primer coating. Paint code in invoice is wrong one. Very cheap for insurance in Canada.

Glad to hear you have not had any serious problems with your Impala (except for the "rear ammos" whatever those are)

But I would be extremely leary of buying a fwd ex-police car. The cops that drive them don't give a crap about them and the fwd cars just will not hold up under abuse as well as the rwd models after a lot of miles/km.

Good luck with yours.

Thank you, for replies.

First of all I'm not from Police. I'm new Canadian.

It means limited on income and abused by local insurance policies.

Nothing from police equipment left. Only original invoice and owners manuals. This is my first second hand car, from many I was using before, with all original documents comes with car.

Yes they abuse them in police. But they are taking very good care of them too.

Rear ammos - rear shock absorbers - I don't know how exactly to call them. Rear struts?

It is not only police car. First of all it is Taxi car (Toronto)

Police package is equal to the heavy duty package:

"...Impalas with the Police

Package offer a larger

cooling system than the

4-door sedan base retail

model, and an enhanced

interior for extra durability

and comfort.

(Driver and Passenger Side Air Bags)

The standard 3800 V6 engine

also gives a 20 hp boost

of power over the base

retail sedan's 3400 V6.

The electrical system

with the 9C1 Police

Package is designed to

allow police departments

to hook up auxiliary

equipment such as sirens

or computers, without

extensive up-fitting .

What's more, the Impala

offers a 100 amp auxiliary

power outlet in the trunk.

Other 9C1 Police

Package features include

a reinforced engine cradle,

reinforced front struts

and a firm ride and handling

suspension..."

It is fun to drive this car every day.

If you need to go fast and pass some guys with or without respect, but quick and safe for everyone on the road, this car will make it for you. If you want just cruise and listen music it is good car too.

This is what I feel.

After curb hitting at 40 km/h car was drivable until service was done.

Lower Right Arm - 300 CAD, Hub - 400 CAD, 1K CAD in total.

The reason for high total is in spare parts and design policy. They are available as whole piece only. Easy to assemble for people at GM plant and in local garage. But you have to pay for it.

After two years of ownership... I find the bullet under driver's seat. I let police to have it.

It is 225500KM now. C-Engine light is on for last 25K. But nothing bad. Still getting 10L/100km no matter city or 401 highway (which is long 16-lines wide parking lot during week days)

Now, if you have this car and getting winters. Just go and get winter tires. If not - it is not safe at all.

Also on the police car, aluminum oil pan. I know, because mine was just changed (steel) $350. can. tax included

About hitting a curb, during a snow storm, I hit a curb, right side front. After all the repairs =$ 1100. That includes a second hand mag.
