2000 Dodge Intrepid from North America - Comments

"One of the nicest cars I've ever owned"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Had to replace two door latches, drivers door and left rear passenger door. They both would make a loud "buzzing" noise when locking, and at times I was unable to open the door either with the key or key-less entry remote.

Check engine light came on, found right bank O2 sensor went bad. The new O2 sensor went bad two hours after it had been replaced, but the sensors had a warranty so the second one involved no added expense.

Slow coolant leak, had to replace the upper housing on the engine.

General comments?

So far, other than the above mentioned problems, this has been a great car. The ride is exceptional, gas mileage with the 2.7 is good, 29 Highway, 22 City. Plenty of power, the quad headlights are the best, should be standard on every car made today.

After reading the other problems associated with the 2.7 motor, I questioned the service manager at my dealership, regarding the sludge build-up and engines gone bad. He told me if you service the car regularly, according to the schedule, you'll have no problems.

I have a 2000 with the 2.7 as well and I am the second owner. There are minor cosmetic flaws, but otherwise a great car. Power, handling, gas mileage is decent. 300 miles per tank. Dark Charcoal paint is oxidizing fast on flat spots.

Last year I had to replace the Crank Case and Cam Shaft sensor, (approx. 50k miles). I noticed sludge build up, but it never affected performance, cooling, etc. I also noticed at each oil change that the buildup would be either more than last change or less. Weird. Was told by the dealer/mechanics that the 2.7 and 4.7 in the Dakota are prone to sludge build-up.

Hit 60k miles and noticed an slight engine knock. Now at 68k, I have to get a new motor!!! Was told by my mechanic and a few others that the 2.7 is infamous for throwing rods! Never told this before... too bad it's an expensive learning experience. I have owned several other cars and trucks from Ford Chevy and Dodge and they have been hit's and misses. I would buy another Intrepid in the future, just not one with the 2.7!!

I am the second owner of my 2000 model. Previous owner religiously maintained oil changes and such due to this car being a company vehicle with a 2 year lease. Car was purchased at 75k miles. Within two weeks doors locks began buzzing loudly and driver's rear door will not open with key pad. We replaced a sensor last year and now we will be hawling the car back down to the Dodge house for yet another check up. (probably sensor AGAIN) *sigh*
