I've had the 4x4 for 2 years and have put over 50,000 miles on it. I've never had big probems. The only thing I've done was replace the muffler and brakes, which are routine. It's great in the snow and ice; I usually end up pulling my friends out of the ditch.
Great car, would recommend it 100% to anyone.
Room for four adults and all their gear.
I too own a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 SE and I can second this opinion.
I own a 1991 king cab truck from nissan and it has 300,000 mls on it and runs like new, the best truck ever.
I have just recently purchased a 91 Pathfinder (Terrano) 3 litre V6 Auto. I would like to know what the fuel consumption is on this vehicle.
Ours has 108000 km on the clock and does about 18 mls per gallon, town and open road driving, which is not very much.

I purchased a 91 Pathfinder SE 3 years ago. It had 59k miles on it. Since then, I have replaced the alternator, battery, one front rotor, shocks, and timing belt (all routine). I did have to rebuilt the auto transmission at about 100k, though - which wasn't cheap. Today I have about 145k miles and it runs very well. My only complaint is the cost of certain replacement parts, such as the rear door shocks (which have worn out to the point they won't hold the door up beyond 2 feet) and the sun-roof shade (dealer quoted it at $172). Its somewhat under-powered compared to a Jeep Cherokee or even an Explorer, but it rides nice, is not too noisy inside, and has held up very well over the years. I get about 18mpg. Since I had to invest in a rebuilt transmission I will probably keep it until it no longer runs.
I also have a 1991 Pathfinder SE. I have been driving it for 3 years and my mother had it for about 5 before that. She now has a 1995 Pathfinder (She wanted cup holders). The 91 has almost 170,000 miles on it and I get about 20mpg. I only non-routine thing that I have replaced is the passenger side door lock motor.
The only complaint I have is the design of the step bars does not allow water to get out easily and the insides rust quite a bit.
I have a 1999 Pathfinder and I just got a notice from my dealership wanting to replace the timing belt, since I have over 60,000 miles on the vehicle. He said he would have to remove the motor to replace the belt and it would cost about $385.00. I have not had any problems with my vehicle, is this necessary to change or just a scam?
I do have one problem, the gas pedal sticks, I have tried oiling but it didn't work.
I have a 91 Pathfinder SE 4x4. This SUV kicks butt. I bought the car in 2000 with 130,000 miles in Boulder, CO. I now have 170,000 miles on it. I just replaced the transmission (rebuilt), very expensive, but needed to be done as I stripped the planetary system doing some sweet off-roading. This car just won't die, I love it. General maintenance I have done to keep it running smooth and looking good are.. new pcv valve, new brake pads, grind rotors, Bosch platinum plugs, BF Goodrich A/T 31" tires, K&N air filter, Fog lamps on lower grill, new exhaust pipes and muffler. I've had this car in some hairy conditions, and it's never let me down. I depend on it day after day and I will continue to do so. My only complaint is the exhaust manifold. Nissan made this poorly and cracks easily. An annoying tink tink sound when it's cold out. Other than that, I would recommend a Pathfinder to anyone who is looking for a reliable, strong-running SUV.
I am the present owner of what I think may be the greatest four banger ever built, as was the 225 Slant Six in the Dodge Darts, I think the 2.4 Litre 12 Valve engine on my 91 Nissan Pathfinder 1/2 ton pick up is close on it's tail as being the greatest most peppy and fuel efficient vehicle ever and I am a hard critic when it comes to power as I own a 98 Mustang GT Convertible with a 4.6 duel exhuast. I purchased this little truck for $1,700 from my local mechanic and it now has a little over 200,000 miles on it and all I have ever done is routine maintanence like the muffler, brakes, battery and I even went as far as to put a AM/FM CD player in it that I bought at Fry's for less than 200 bucks with a JVC head unit and polk audio speakers, it males my little truck one I want to keep and love driving as much as my stang, way to go Nissan. No wonder I see the glimpse of this classic truck in your new (SHIFT) commercial on TV.

I have owned a 1992 2wd manual Pathfinder since 1995.104,000 miles now. As maintenance free as one could ever expect a vehicle to be.
The manifold is noisy before it warms up, a design fault I am told. The lift gate pistons went bad. It has a bit of rust under the rear doors. I maintain it well and it loves me back.
It has plenty of power and is quite comfortable for an SUV. Interior has held up very well, even with dog travelers.
My spare tire is inside, would prefer it to be outside for more interior room. Is there an aftermarket fix?
I won't need an SUV for home/business for my next vehicle, but I would give a mighty thumbs up on Pathfinder.
I have 1990 pathfinder XE and it has been a good vehicle. I do not "off road" it. The problems I have had have been beyond routine maintenance include replacement of cracked exhaust manifolds three years ago and the new ones are cracked again. The transmission had to be replaced at 98,000 miles. Also the rear door lifters work only in the summer. A door lock motor needs to be replaced. There is only very very minor rust considering we "salt" the roads in winter. I will keep the machine for a while. It drives and rides well and is great in snow.
I have a 1997 pathfinder and it has a crack in the manifold and I just received notice from Midas Muffler that it will cost $1550.00 to replace the one defective side of the manifold. Is there any recall on these manifold as it is apparent that this happens quite often?
Owned our 93 Pathfinder for 4 years. It has proved very reliable and an all around good vehicle. It has 115K miles and still runs strong.
MPG is about 19 on the highway. Wish it was better.
The 1996 and up pathfinders have recall on the exhaust manifolds that are under a 100,000 call you dealer with your vin number.
I own a 1991 pathfinder and everything is working like new on it. I have only had to replace the alternator and the brakes since I bought it in 2002. The only complaint I have is that it dosn't get many miles to the gallon. Any way I want to put some new rims on it and want to know where I can get some cheap ones and also what it would look like with rims.

I have a 91 pathfinder that I am currently pulling the motor on. It was running fine with 180,000 mile, until I thought it was submersible. I found a motor with 69,000 miles on it that I am putting in. the only complaint that I have is the same as many of you have stated, being the exhaust manifold leak. I have tried to prevent this from happening again before I put the new motor in, but everyone seems to have a different idea as to what causes it. I had the new manifolds ground, and that is supposed to fix the problem, time will tell if this is true.
