The Carter BBD carburetor was problematic.
The 258 motor tends to leak oil due to a plastic valve cover. Purchase an aftermarket aluminum cast cover to cure the problem.
I chose to switch to a V8 motor. The AMC 360 is a good performer and able to provide 100's of thousands of miles of service.
Tougher than Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or any of the truck wannabees from across the ocean. The Jeep J series was the finest American truck ever built and I'm lucky to have one. Get one if you can!
Hi, Hey Steven, I m holding in my hands the title and such and will take delivery of my new J10, New-ta-me that is; I was the first to reach the seller on this 1983 with 51000 orig miles. The interior original and imaculate black, I'm first going to do some miner rust repair, then paint, The 258 purs like a kitten, shift is tight like new, 5900lbs of American Jeep J10!
Peter in CT. ps Going to be looking into a Jeep Club membership.
5900 lbs with a 258?
Use a calendar to measure 0-60 times!
Who cares? about 0-60 times? I owned an 80 J-10 that looked as bad as your grandmother and could pull stumps, run through 8 inches of mud, plow through snow and never get stuck, and still get 18 MPG. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Hey, I have gotten a 1977 Jeep J10. I have dropped a AMC 360 in it, and am happy as I could ever be. In my eyes it's the best truck I have ever driven. Now it sits with almost new everything; inside the cab is all original, and it is lifted 6 inches. It still has some rust spots the size of dimes on the wheel wells, but that will be gone soon, and it will be fully restored. Perfect for a first truck. Glad to hear some other Jeep fans.
Forever King Spoon.
In the rust belt, the only way to get rid of rust is to replace the panel and rust proof it before you put it on. I have tried every thing from primer, bondo, phodphate coatings- nothing stops rust long term once it staRTS in wet climates, except putting on new galvinized panels and coating the inside of them with wax. All else is just fooling yourself.
I've owned many makes and models of trucks over the years. I must admit that the '82 J10 with the 360 and 4 speed manual that I bought in september, is the baddest, toughest, and most fun vehicle A person can own.
Received a 1986 Grand Jeep Wagoneer by default. Had some wiring problems. Hadn't run in two years. fixed the wiring and it started right up. Changed oil and xmission fluids plus filters. It has run absolutley great since. Never had a Jeep before because I was afraid of them. Not now..Don.
I happen to own a 77 J10 and my thoughts are the same as everyone elses - it's hands down the best truck ever built. I love it with a disturbing passion and will never let go of the beast. I have owned it for 3 years now, hoping to make it 30. It is a beautiful peice of american history that cannot be mached by another truck, and I just wish that there was more of them around.
Hi,
I have 5 Jeep J-10's & a rust free Grand Wagoneer. Have driven full size Jeeps for about 25 years. Have 3 8 foot beds (2 six & 1 eight cyl) & 2 6 foot beds (both v8s).The years are 77,two 79's,80 & 87,the wagoneer is a '90.
I use one of the full size (8'bed) for driving the beach in NC. with a camper on top & pull a zodiac type boat behind. That truck refuses to get stuck! Just finished puttin' a floor in the fish truck. Over the years I have cut up about a dozen of them & have parts coming out of my ears.
Truely the greatest truck ever built!
Neat site also

I “inherited” a 1978 Jeep J10 pickup from my Dad when I was 16. It was a long bed, quadra-trac, 360, automatic. He bought a then new (1985) Chevy Scottsdale with a 305. There is just no comparison between those two trucks. When he needed to get something out of the shed on the other side of the apple orchard he didn’t go get it in his Chevy. It was my Jeep. Especially in the fall when the ground was good and slimy! I can honestly say, the best truck I have ever owned, and 16 year olds can be pretty creative when it comes to abuse & neglect. I still am “passively” looking for another. Not too many up here in Alaska anymore.
I just bought an 80 j10 with the 258 and I'm real happy with it, I've dipped my 35s in a couple of holes and was very impressed, and we got some pretty good holes in east texas.I'm in the beginning stages of restoring it, but its been a joy so far, best truck in the world, I've pulled a chevy out,,, just thought id throw that in...
I had to sell my "74 J10 Pioneer in early 2005, and I'm feeling sick about it to this day; hands down the toughest and most fun truck I've ever owned. I payed off an automotive shop doing engine upgrades for a guy who couldn't pay the bill and ended up with a great deal on the truck.
After a total performance rebuild on the AMC 401 I won't even begin to detail here including a re-boring of 35 over and all new high performance internals including a crazy cam and crank combo, I was peaking close to 500HP (492HP). About 4 inches of lift with a front spring over and rear custom shackles plus 2 inch lift leaves, and 35 x 12.50 Mickey Thompson Baja Claws, got me pretty much anywhere.
I hope to build another one when I get back from Korea later this year. The J-series Jeep pickups are simultaneously the ugliest and the most beautiful trucks ever made.

Howdy boy's and girl's,
I just picked up a 1978 J-20 dully with an ambulance bed on the back! It has the 360 and a 4 speed gear box. It was on a USAF base since new and now its mine! HOT DIGIDY DANG MAIN!!!
Now all I have to do is go 1400 miles one way and pick it up and drag it back here to Memphis... Good an excuse as any for a road trip!
Any one out there have any info on this here truck? How many made? Resale value? Etc...
Oh yeah, it's supposed to have only 14,700 original miles on it!!!
Ye HAAA!!! Y'allll.
Hello. I agree with everybody else, The J10 pickup is the toughest truck ever built! My '81 J10 Laredo short-bed will be with me for years to come. What other vehicle would make a 16yo want to trade his 92 camaro heritage edition for a truck? Mine's got a 360, 4-speed, 33" tires and will go through anything I can throw at it, and my parents can't tell me I'm speeding because the speedometer is broken. Now I just have to fix my see-through floorboards and the rust spots on the bed right behind the fender flares. The only problem I've ever had was a lose bolt holding the power wire to the solenoid for the ignition. These are great trucks and if you ever come across one make sure to get it before somebody else does.
I'm 16 and just bought an 82 j10 with the 258 I have only put 100 miles on it since I got plus some towing around the yard shes not fast, but she'll take a house off the foundation I'm planing on starting full restoration as soon as I can find a replacement fuel tank I love this truck I don't want what everyone else has and none of my Chevy or ford friends get the jeep thing, but they'll find out when my kids are driving it... right. There tanks and run for ever get one while you can p.s.I'm looking for another one for my mom.
