1993 Ford Taurus GL from North America - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The head gasket failed requiring a complete rebuild of the 3.8 engine at 79,000 miles.

The AC compressor failed.

An engine mount broke.

The automatic transmission case cracked and had to be replaced.

The radiator blew out and was replaced.

General comments?

The most expensive car I have ever owned from a repair standpoint. I do not plan to buy another Ford product. I have had other makes: GM, Honda, VW, Toyota, and BMW. Never have I had so many expensive problems with one car. I could not get the zone manager to even call me to discuss several problems. This is AFTER I explained to the Ford dealer that this did not give me much incentive to buy another Ford product.

Currently I am facing similar type of problems (head gasket broken) with my 1993 Tarus. I got it from a deler couple of months back and drove just 2000 miles after that head gasket broken. Unfortunately it looks that my thermostat was not reflecting correct heat generated by the engine.

To get it repaired I started getting estimates from different garages and more or less every one is saying that it need a big investment (around $2500). I really got shocked to hear this figures, utill I had a good belief on FORD vehicles and was in the impression that being an american car it would be more reliable and dependable. With this experience I lost hope on FORD brand and don't want to recomond or buy a car from FORD.

I currently own a 1991 Ford Taurus. I have experienced some problems with my car, such as, heater core leak, radiator leak, and currently my steering gear needs to be replaced. Even with these problems I do not feel as thought it is a bad car, in fact I still have faith in American cars. One thing I would recommend is to be wary in buying a Jeep, but that is another story.

Just bought a used 1993 tarus. SO far nothing, but praise. Mechanic treated me squarley. It's a clean car and will go lots more kilometers. Its got 120,000 kms now and they say it will last and last IF I TAKE CARE OF IT. Replaced brake pads, rotors, calipers, and new tires, for incredibly inexpensive 280 dollars can. for left and right front tires total of 280 dollars... ANd I know the scrap yard is full of cheap parts.Theres no rust and well I am very pleased with this beast! Smooth ride...but what do I want for a 13 year old car?

Or try riding a bike for 6 months like i just did hahaha

I have a 1993 Ford Taurus which I bought used. I put 2000 miles on it before it would just die on me while driving. I mean a complete shutdown. After 20 minutes. it would startup again and a few minutes. down the road shutdown again. I can hear the fuel-pump at the gas inlet when the ignition is placed in the on position, but haven't got a clue as to what the problem is. Never again will I buy a Ford. My other Taurus is dead in my driveway. Walking now.
