"Maybe I just got a lemon, but this car was constantly in the shop"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

After the car ran out of it's 90 day used car warranty the head gasket went.

A couple thousand miles later the power steering pump went. That also proceeded to flood the alternator and that had to be replace too.

At about 60,000 miles the struts started to leak and had to be replaced.

At about 80,000 miles the head gasket

went again.

85,000 miles the transmission was shot.

90,000 miles the alternator was shot.

Luckily I had bought a warranty from an independent company when I got the vehicle.

They paid out close to 5,000 dollars in repairs on this vehicle.

And no I was not taking this car to some mechanic that just took me for a ride.

Plus it is kind of easy to tell there is a problem when the car leaks antifreeze, oil, and the transmission slips and grinds badly.

Oh and make sure you know how to change your brake pads cause you will be doing this a lot.

General comments?

The ride of the car was very nice and it looks even better.

Very good on the gas.

Surprisingly roomy for being a 2 door.

I had a '95 Cutlass SL as well and I put close to $6,000 into it in 3 years. It only had 38K on it when I bought it, but crazy things would break on it and NOTHING was cheap to fix. the struts failed in the the rear, the turn signal switch failed whiche caused the brake lights not to work (real safe!!) I put brakes on it for like $900 (ridiculous) most of which was calipers for the rear disk brakes and the labor costs (thought due to millions of these cars on the road, they would be cheap to fix... wrong!!). The transmission would stick in third gear a lot too which meant driving it on the highway at 3500 RPM's. I would have to shut the car off and start it again to get it to shift out to fourth. A front wheel bearing started to go at 95,000 and I ended up trading it in. I drove it hard, but not THAT hard that things should be breaking so frequently. I realize I bought it used, but 38K usually isn't considered high mileage and it was in mint condition when I got it. Actually, it still looked great even at close to 100K. I wish they made the rest of the car as good as the body!!

I have a 95 olds cutlass supreme for almost a yr now n my total repair cost has only been $400 ,part of that being my fault (damaged rear caliper when I was doing brakes). My car has 240K kms on it n looks amazing (undercoated every yr). I have never had a prob with it starting or running. I think that any car can be a good or bad one but this has been best car I have owned in years. I love my cutlass.

I have a 95 Cutlass Supreme and had the problem described above about sticking in 3rd gear. It was the neutral safety switch. A transmission guy put it on his computer and it didn't know what gear it was in. It said it was in 4th when he put it in Reverse! Yes, it resets itself when you turn the ignition off and back on again because it's the computer. After replacing the neutral safety switch all seems to be fine. I've had to replace the alternator, replace the gas tank (used one of course), and blinker switch, and now I need a flywheel... It does have 130,000 miles on it. I hope it lasts as well as our 1991 Olds Eighty Eight. That has 205,000 miles and still going!

I had one and it was a piece of junk! Drove nice UNTIL everything went wrong with it! It's funny how they are terrible, and expensive to maintain and we still see so many people with them. I think we both got seriously ripped off!

Good Luck with your next car whenever you get one if you do just don't get another Cutlass. I bought a 1994 with 101,000 miles on it and the transmission is in bad shape at 121,000 so I'm on my way FAR FAR AWAY from Cutlass Supremes!
