Alternator went out at about 100,000 miles.
Tire pressure light goes off every two weeks due to tires losing pressure.
Glue to seal the weld on the front edge of the hood let loose leaving chipped paint all along the front edge of the hood.

It's a alright car just had what I thought was some bad luck. I really loved it when I bought it. But it just isn't built to last past the warranty.
And the cup holder in front of the shifter is useless. Can't put the car in park with a beverage there.
I am in the market to buy a new-used car. I am a college student, which means that I cannot afford too much. I found a nice looking Alero with 70,000 miles on it for a really good price. However, after reading these reviews on this site I'm pretty nervous and just hoping for some feedback. I feel that a lot of times people who take the time to give reviews on these websites do so because they are not happy, and those who are have no reason to comment so they don't. Therefore, naturally, the only comments are generally bad comments. So some good honest feedback would greatly be appreciated. Thanx! :)
The "cup holder" is actually a mount for an ashtray I believe.
Purchased 1999 Oldsmobile Alero GLS in May 2003 for my wife with 78,000 kms. Car is loaded with lots of power and a real good stereo. Other than that, it has been nothing short of the biggest lemon I have ever purchased in 35 years of buying/leasing vehicles. Here is a list of the things that went wrong after 80,000 kms.:
- right and left front hubs replaced twice
- dash trouble lights constantly lighting up- - 3 ignition modules and $1200 later, only the Service Engine Soon light is permanently on.
- only 2 settings left on heat/air fan: high and highest
- right front coil spring broke at 116,000 kilometres
I bought an Alero 2 years ago, It's a 1999.
I've replaced the front right bearings.
I've had to reseal my transmission pan 3 times and it still leaks. Front brakes Disc, Calipers and Rotors.
Constant low pressure on my tires. My trunk had a leak and filled my spare tire with water, and rust. The rear defrost has never work, the front defroster sounds like it has sand and small rocks in it. The mirror adjuster broke inside the door. The fuel gauge bounces up and down when the tanks is full. (but then again who can afford that)
There are several other things I can't think of right now, but you get the jist.
I can only hope that some of the stuff I have read already
doesn't happen to me, but at this current moment my car barley starts. When it starts it shakes and runs like Crap.
Good Luck selling yours cause mines going in the paper Tomorrow. Thanks bye.
I must have hit the Jackpot with my 99. Besides replacing my sixth wheel bearing just before Christmas, I have all of the above problems and my fuel tank rusted out at three and a half years. Like a previous poster, my family has driven Olds products since 1970. This is absolutely the worst excuse for a car that I have ever owned.
Next time I'll wait a few years til they work out all the kinks!!!
I really liked the body style and extras (lthr, alloy wheels) that came with my '99 Olds Alero - purchased in 2000. After a while though, I found that I should have done more research.
Besides minor repairs (brakes)
- I've had to repair a head gasket leak TWICE!
- My C/V joints - went out
- My rear window defogger hasn't worked in years!
- My Radiator cap went bad (have you ever heard of this??) causing my car to overheat - in the snow - no cell + 2 kids in the car with me!!!
- My Alloy wheel has had to be replaced after hitting a pot hole - thanks!
- THIS morning, my blower (heater/defrost) quit working.
- I can't wait to get rid of this thing - Yes, it's finally paid off, but WHAT NEXT?!
