1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS from North America - Comments

"Looks good, but not necessarily reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have been experiencing all the common things that everybody else has experienced with this car. However, I may also have a not so common problem. When I try to accekerate too quickly, the car won't go, it just sorta chugs along. I can fix it by taking my foot off the gas pedal and slowly pressing it back down. Then one time, I was flying down the highway at 75 mph and I pulled in front of a semi truck after passing him, and I couldn't excel... I had to pull off the highway so I didn't get run over. This could have been a serious accident including my two small children in the back seat.

General comments?

I could use some advice to save money on diagnostic testing. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Why were you driving so fast? You were exceeding the speed limit you know. What is the hurry= = start earlier and you can drive more reasonably and not break the law!

I have a 1997 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme.

And my car has been having the same problem. So I told my brother about how when I push on the gas it takes the car awhile to go. so he suggest I need transmission fluid so I got that and the car ran fine. but every now and then it will be fine and then it chugs a little also.

How can this problem be fixed. since I'm not the only one it happens to.

I suppose you are exceeding the speed limit as well??

Who doesn't exceed the speed limit? It is almost impossible to pass someone without exceeding the speed limit even if the person you are passing is going a couple mph under the limit. Not everyone can afford to drive "grandma" speed. I would advise having your fuel injectors cleaned and maybe a good tune up..ie. plugs, wires, etc. Good luck.

Yes, a good tune-up could be in order as I cannot believe that these cars were complete lemons all the time. I hope I don't get behind the goody two-shoes who states that they, and they only it seems follow the speed limits. People who drive under the speed limit are actually more likely to cause an accident because the people who pile up behind them will then have to pass, putting them in the other lane where other cars may materialize.

I agree, who actually drives the speed limit ALL the time? However who passes a semi when they're already going 75 mph with 2 small kids in the car?

I had a caprice classic that did this and currently own a corsica that does this chugging action. most likely the torque convertor lock-up solenoid. not a huge deal, but might cost some money (about $500? including labour at trans shop)
