"Poor man's Lamborghini"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have burned out four clutches from revving it to 7,000 rpm, dumping the clutch and watching the heads turn.

My 15" subwoofer blew out and my amp overheated once, but that didn't effect the performance of my car.

General comments?

Tons of power, I've wasted so many Camaros in races and a couple of Vipers too. It sucks down gas really bad though. Especially when above 6,000 RPMs.

It's a 1.3 L... that's all... oh yeah... did you really smoke a Viper... Corvettes I can believe, I have smoked them myself... but a Viper?!?

It is the 1.3 Wankel Rotary... I dunno about that Viper stuff either. You'd have to have NOS, or upgraded Turbos for that kinda performance. I have seen it happen before, only once. And he had NOS, and 24 PSI of boost running at the time.

4 clutches? Dropping the clutch at 7000 RPM will eat any clutch as well as blow up a rotary engine eventually. Not a reliability problem, a human driver error.

Human driving error? I don't think so, bad ass, yes. If I were to buy an RX7 it means selling my 5.0 which can handle that type of fun.

If a 5.0 Tried to hit 7 Grand on the Tach it would do more than toast the clutch, and if you tried dumping the clutch at 7k you would likely break an engine or tranny mount.

Vipers...NO. 4 clutches...WHY? Some people don't know how to drive a high performance car and we all know that:)

I own a 1993 RX7 Twin Turbo. They may look like a racecar at a reasonable price at first, but if you really want to make yours fast, you have to dump some serious cash (tens of thousands of dollars).

I have put in a new engine, new turbos, a turbo timer, upgraded brakes, new tires and wheels and my car is still nearly stock. Stock RX7's are not CRAZY FAST... they run neck and neck with a stock Mustang Cobra. With a few relatively inexpensive mods you should be able to take a Camaro Z28 in a straight line and demolish any stock Mustang... but the RX7 will out handle almost anything on the road, so if you are racing turns you will come out on top every time!

The RX7 is an insanely fun sports car, but be prepared to spend some cash if you want to really get it going fast.

Yeah, RX7s are very expensive, but if you bolt on a blow off valve, your car will cut down 2 seconds on the quarter mile and add some serious horse power...

What, I have never heard of a blow off valve knocking off 2 seconds in the 1/4 mile that I think is totally incorrect.

Omg some people never cease to amaze me. Rx7s can be extremely powerful vehichles for right around 15 grand in parts as long as your transmission and differential hold up, mind you this assumes you do all the work yourself as I have, I have around 10 grand in mine and I run low 12s, but this is merely because I am still running the stock fuel system and intercooler. the best way to pull extra horsepower for cheap is to get catback a downpipe a midpipe intake, a fuel pressure regulator and a boost controller, this should cost around 1000 if you do it right, by not actually buying all the exhaust components, but buying a muffler and getting custom piping done,

So your telling me that a rx-7 won't be able to kill a mustang on straights with 0-60 at 5 seconds I find that hard to belive.

I wonder if the guy who put tens of thousands of dollars was smart enough to change out the performance chip~~ rev limiter, top speed limiter... c'mon guys

The 3rd gen rx7 is indeed a great car. However, like any performance motor, it has its issues. If you want to run high boost pressures on the motor then you might want to look into getting an oil cooler or invest in another system to cool the oil and fluids, because rotary motors have a tendency to heat up (ultimately causing detonation/damaged seals)...

As for beating a viper... if the driver of the viper is a crappy one... and the rx-7 is modified, I can definitely see it happening. I've seen people lose over 1 second in the quarter mile just because they don't know how to drive.

Key things to look for in the mazda rx-7 line up is wearing bushings and u-joints, transmission failures, you want to make sure all of the vacuum hoses are not cracked or damaged in any way. The rotary motor relies heavily on its vacuum system (as do a lot of turbocharged vehicles) so springing a vacuum leak will cause the car to run funny.

I already mentioned that you want to make sure you get something to cool the motor...

Other than that you should be able to upgrade them a lot. Rx-7's are free revving, all around fun cars. But because of limited parts availability, they end up taking a lot of money out of your pocket.

For similar performance, I drive a nissan 240sx (With the sr20det swap) and after a few upgrades I am in the general range of a stock rx-7 TT. Of course to compete on the skidpad I had to upgrade my suspension, since the 240's are entirely too mushy (compared to their japanese counterparts)...

Anyways, If you are interested in getting an rx-7... I would definitely make sure that the turbo system is in good shape, the drive train is good, as well as the vacuum system. They are a great car... and if you give it some TLC it will reward you back.

My friend informs me that the performance of an Acura Integra is significantly inferior to that of a Mazda RX7 Twin Turbo. That of course would be the model that was imported to the USA between 1993 and 1995.

I would be obliged if other Car Survey readers have any observations on this.
