"Just paid off and now the repair costs kick in"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The brake system has been a nightmare. We have replaced the brakes 3 times and now in the past year a recall for the brakes was sent.

Prior to that, we replaced an EGR valve - less than 1 month later a recall is sent for EGR.

Most recently, 3 times now, in the past few months my vehicle loses braking ability for no apparent reason. Prior to the loss of brakes, the car seems to run rough.. sounding like it will stall out. The exhaust gets noisy then the brake pedal becomes very stiff and goes to the floor. The braking distance doubles and is very frightening.

In the past 2 weeks I have replaced the catalytic converter ($800.00) because the mechanic thought a oxygen sensor was leading to the car power being lost and ultimately loosing power braking. Well, of course this did not work. A few days later - again I cannot stop and the car is back in the shop with the EGR valve being replaced for a second time.

Just 2 days ago - again this occured. I again returned it - now I am being told they cannot detect the problem and unless I can bring it to the dealer exactly at the moment this is happening (which means driving without brakes) then they cannot detect it.

Finally, the best part... I work 8-5 (common huh??) and drive approximately 20 miles to work each day - the dealer/service center is closed at 5:30 pm and open to 8 pm on thursdays. So the plan is - this can only happen again on Thursday, after work, on my way home.

My recommendation - don't buy a first year, new model car, ever!!!!

I would like to agree with you statement. I inherited a 1995 Blazer from my mother and I have had problems with my EGR valve, (at least 6 times), and also the same braking problem. My exhaust was replaced two years ago and it is currently in shop for the exhaust again. You are not the only one that has had difficulties with this vehicle.

I agree with the other folks who have been commenting about the Blazer's EGR woes. I have a 1995 LS that has run like a top until recently; now I'm getting the same scary idling and braking problems, and it's due to the EGR. My mechanic told me that it runs about $130.00, PLUS the labor to get to it. I'm having him tow it to his garage tomorrow because the braking distance has doubled, and the petal becomes rock stiff, along with the steering! If your Blazer starts to exhibit these symptoms, get it to the garage without delay - you don't want to have a collision! Other than this, the Blazer has treated me really well; I'm the original owner, and I've just topped 100,000 miles!

I have a 2000 Chevy Blazer, and at 20,000 miles, I had to have the EGR valve replaced. It was stalling while I was at stops. Actually, one time it stalled on me as I was driving and lost my power steering, and it was all I could handle steering at 55mph and get it safely to the shoulder of the road with my one year old in the back seat. I am now at 37,000+ miles it has only done it twice.

I also have a 1995 Blazer LS that is going into the shop for its sixth egr valve. Any time the vehicle is driven over 300 miles on a trip the egr valve fails.

In regards to the EGR problem you are all having with your 1995 Chevy Blazers. I have had the same... but after I replaced the EGR valve and the problem continued I ran some test, and found out that the problem was not in the valve, but in the wiring. One of the wires in the harness was bad therefore the EGR valve would turn on when it was supposed to, but fail to turn off. It should turn off at idle speed that is why when you would stop your car would idle like crap and stall out. Replace the wire, fix the problem. No need to buy a $150 EGR valve.

Good luck - Nate.

I have a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer 1995 LT and the EGR is the least of my problem. I have replaced twice the EGR valve, the water pump, fuel pump, starter, catalytic converter, fuel injector and around seven different sensor. And the crazy thing is that since I have that car in 1997 with 1,200 miles I haven been overseas since 1998 in Bosnia, Kosovo and now in Afghanistan. I just drove that car for only 9,000 miles and I feel that the car is not good.

I have a 95 Blazer LT with 152,354 miles on it. I have yet to have to replace anything on it, aside from wearables like brake pads and tires, belt, etc. Hopefully my luck will continue, and hope that others experience the same. I love my truck.

I have had the same problems with my 1995 Chevy Blazer LS. The exhaust gas recirculation valve, (EGR valve), was acting up. I was about 40 miles away from my house, when all of a sudden my blazer lost an enormous amount of power. Then at the next red light, it started idling like it had a huge cam. Then it stalled. Well, I made it to a gas station, and checked the valve. All I did was cleaned all the carbon out of it. Man, was there a build up! Runs fine for now...

I have a 96 Blazer with EGR valve problems similar to all those I have read here. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the EGR valve is located. I would like to try to clean whatever Carbon build up is on it before I make the leap to replacing the whole thing. I am not a mechanic, but I try to take as good of care of my vehicle as I can... on a poor mans budget that is. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Allen.

Lucky for me some of it was covered by the extended warranty.

I have had numerous problems with my 94 s10.

The EGR valve of course.

Heater core, fuel pump, fuel regulator, ball joints, freeze plugs, power windows and door locks, radio, rear defroster, ignition switch, climate control switch, support arm, ABS, and try to work on the motor when your hood release cable snaps.

This vehicle only has 81000 mile on it.

Last Blazer I will ever own.

Chevy really made a bomb on this one.

I had a 1988 Blazer w/4.3 engine. I only got 325,776 miles out of it. The problem I think with people having trouble is number one: buying cheap gasoline. Bad or poor quality gas will cause the engine to run poorly and build up carbon deposits on everything, such as, EGR valve opening. Number two: when you go for grease oil and filter... make sure the mechanic really greases everything. On Blazers especially the skid plates make it hard to grease so most just don't. Make them do it.

I have a 1995 Blazer and have had nothing but problems. The fuel pump and filter were changed less than 1yr ago and now I cannot re-start my truck each time I get gas and at other random times during the day. I called the mechanic who said it is probably the fuel pump. I've had the oil cooler lines blow off the truck, the exhaust done twice, the brakes are horrible, and the serpentine belt and tensioner. I've spent more in repairs on this truck then I did on my first car!

I have a 95 Blazer. Once more it is in the shop. EGR valve or something!! Who cares. I love my Blazer and want her back. When she's good she's good. When she's bad she's bad. But she's mine!

For the guy who asked where the EGR valve is it is located directly below the throttle body. It has two bolt holding it to the manafold and has either a vacum line to it, or in the blazer's case, a 5 pronged wire connector. Very easy to remove and clean. You can get to it by removing a section of the intake hose. Good luck. I'm reading this post becuase I'm fighting the exact symptoms now. 106,000 miles.
