2005 Renault Clio Sport 182 Cup from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"An outstanding drive and highly recommended"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The only minor fault from delivery was that the glove box light wasn't working. A new globe fixed the problem.

General comments?

The car was delivered in beautifully prepared condition. A pity it had to be driven out of the showroom into the pouring rain.

The dealer customer service was exemplary. The salesperson provided a full rundown on everything a new Clio Sport owner would need to know and then some. He was enthusiastic about the car he was delivering and left no stone unturned in explaining the many virtues of the Clio Sport. I found out that he races a Clio Sport in local competition on a regular basis.

I have yet to have any significant problem requiring dealer attention, so the jury is still out regarding warranty claims.

Having recently owned a series of three turbocharged Nissans (CA18det Silvia, R33 Skyline GTS25t and R32 GTSt) and being stung heavily for insurance premiums because of their 'grey import' status, I was looking for a car with performance, some street credibility, comfort, affordability and economy. A lot of Internet research kept pointing toward one car in the price range I was considering.

Enter the Clio Sport 182. On all counts, this is a car that delivers. The Clio's performance is fractionally behind the turbo cars previously owned, but it delivers without any lag and in a manner which is perfectly suited to its chassis/suspension set-up.

The Clio is a performance supremo because of the balance between engine power and chassis dynamics. Straight line acceleration (still outstandingly quick) is not the only parameter by which to judge a car of the Clio Sport's pedigree.

What a hoot this car is to drive. The engine, gearbox combination is superlative. I can't wait until the engine is properly run in to explore its potential.

Interior appointments provide a most comfortable place to be, albeit with a firm ride, but at least one senses complete and reassuring contact with the road. The trim seems to be of good quality and fitment, and the standard electronics provide plenty to keep one happy.

Seating is fine for someone my size (5'8''), although room around the pedals is at a premium. Their height for heel and toe driving is very good for a production line car. Obviously careful consideration was given in the design and development phase for a car with true sporting intentions.

I am somewhat disappointed in the quality of the factory CD/radio system, particularly the speakers. It doesn't take too much to hear them distorting. At the volume played, it shouldn't be the head unit causing the problem. If the speakers are the weak link, they will soon be replaced with some quality after-market items.

I look forward to driving my new Clio Sport every day. It is such an engaging vehicle in all respects.

Well written review, good job. Should be used as a model for others.

Ninety kilometers and it only gets an 8/10 for reliability?

You've only just got it home, haven't you?

You are right. The 8/10 I gave for reliability was a little premature. Probably a little cautious as I am not used to European cars. The car has now done just over a thousand kilometres completely hassle free (as I would expect). I've taken the Clio on one longer trip so far, through the winding roads of the Adelaide Hills then south to the seaside town of Goolwa. It performed beautifully. It is everything I hoped it would be and more.

I've got a 2005 RS Clio Cup F1. As the above review says, its one seriously competent little unit. A go-kart for the street. Had mine for 9 months with about 12,000km's on the clock now. Should you buy one from new, thrash from new when properly warmed up. Running in per manufacturers specs is a total crock. And get them tyre pressures up! I run mine at 40psi front, 38 rear. Loves it, and the feedback is a delight. 10/10 car for me. Few rattles and squeaks here and there in the interior, but hey its French. Just won Evo magazines 2005 Car of the Year award also. Go get one now!

I have had my car since May 2005, I have now covered over 24,000km since new, it is my work car. It has passed all test's, driven hard or taking it easy. The engine itself does like to be warm, as the rev cut-out indicates, but once warm, it is almost perfect. Try to compare another hatchback to this cars price and more than exceptional performance and in this country you will not find one. I have had one fault covered under warranty, it was a fault in the automatic headlights (not a real worry, they still worked except I had to use the usual stalk method!). The paint has held up, the tyres and brakes are still doing well for being driven so hard, this car is unbelievable for the money. If you are looking at a small hatch for performance then do not waste your time elsewhere. (I know I have previously owned, a Suzuki gti, 205 gti, and an evo 4), (fair enough the evo was quicker, but not half as enjoyable). And to be honest not many cars keep up with this on the street because of its handling and superior power to weight. (it hits 60km/h in 3 seconds.) No turbo required. Enjoy.
