The thermostat wasn't working properly, it was at normal all the time. It leaked as well.
There was a leak in the water pump casing.
Now the dealer is claiming that there is a crack in the engine block.
I don't think that the engine block in a 2002 should have any cracks in it unless it was faulty in the first place.
I don't understand how the thermostat would always read normal.
I had no indication that something was wrong, I serviced the car according to the recommendations.
If the engine block is cracked you will see oil deposits in the coolant, steam from the exhaust even when hot, white gunge in the oil filler cap, and the coolant will need topping up all the time.
You can check all these yourself quite easily.
Contact the Center for Auto Safety in Washington DC. This is a KNOWN problem in the 2.7L V-6 found in the Intrepid/Concord/as well as other models. There may be a Class Action Lawsuit in the very near future. For a complete and informative review visit www.dontbuyone.org. It gives all contact points and directions to deal with this problem.
I too had a problem with the thermostat and had to replace it because it was leaking.
Now I have to replace the pump casing as well. Overall the car has been good until this.
