Water pump failed.
Replaced a few of the hoses when first bought.
Wood trim on front of dash has started to crack slightly.
Slight crack on dashboard.
Couple of small cracks in leather seats.
Had to replace AC freon.
Very reliable vehicle. Have not had any major problems with car since purchase. No work done except minor issues mentioned above and normal upkeep.
Car has a very stable and quiet ride, but could use a bit more help in acceleration department, especially coming out of stops. But I owe this to the weight of the vehicle.
Very luxurious car. Every option that you could wish for and more. The interior has held up amazingly well for such an older vehicle.
I feel very safe in this car. Even though this was a limited edition car for Volvo, and was produced in Italy, it has all of the safety features of other Volvo cars.
Interesting that you found the turbo-4 to be lacking in accleration. I have a '89 780 with the V6 and have no complaints about the acceleration. It's no muscle car, but moves out pretty good for an old Volvo.
Hello, just an update to my initial review. I meant to say that I had to replace the drive/accessory belts, not hoses. As far as I know any hoses on car are original.
I just "fixed" the splits in the leather seats by ordering black sheepskin covers from sheepskin.com. They were very reasonably priced and installed very quickly. Nice touch to the interior.
I had the car fully tuned yesterday including new cap/rotor and fuel filter. The car was starting to run a bit rough, but now drives like a dream. This should be done on all older vehicles if it has not been done in awhile, especially with fuel prices so high.
All in all I am very happy with my 780 coupe. While it does not get any or very little attention, it is very well built. They pop up all of the time on Ebay so I would definitely recommend looking into one. But you might want to have it inspected previously to purchase.
'89 780 Turbo.
The Best Car a person could possibly ask for. I have owned mine since 2002 and it is a dream come true. I have friends who all have expensive BMW's, Lexus', etc. and they all have problems (mechanical). They all agree that my car is unique in the looks department, but they had no idea of the speed and touring abilities. Recently some friends wanted to take a road trip to Tunica, Ms to gamble at some of the casinos there. There were 5 of us wanting to go, but we did not want to ride cramped up so I agreed to drive my car along with my friend who drives a BMW 745 iL. When I say the Bertone handled its business against a new 06 745 775 dollar car note, I mean we cruised at 85 miles per hour the entire way. My friends had no idea my car could ride like that and accelerate and cruise at 100 mph when the road was open. The comfortable seats in the front and rear are a pleasure to sit in. The acoustics are perfect with all the soundproofing Bertone put into the vehicle. The climate control is definitely before its time making the 780 a total thrill ride. The 780 can rival any coupe built for touring and that a fact. Its fun to drive and can handle traffic well. If you can get your hands on one, you will be the happiest person on your block.
