Evaporator in the air conditioner, which the dealer tried to charge me to fix.
Also the car quits on the highway or won't start frequently. We have had it to the dealer several times, they say they can't fix it. They don't know what's wrong but they have never checked it over, they just put it on the diagnostics and when nothing shows they send it home. This has been a problem from day 1 when we bought the car and we have owned it almost 2 years now.
Tried to call Chrysler and they couldn't care less. The dealer doesn't care - he's got our money.
One, you bought this car used, so you have no idea what the person did to it before you.
Two, I own a 96 Dodge Intrepid, and I bought it from a family who takes excellent care of their cars. In my opinion, the car is a dream, and if yours is not, maybe you should check around and talk to other Intrepid owners, because I have heard nothing but positive things about them. My family has always been very satisfied with Dodge.
I purchased a 96 Intrepid "new". I'm amazed at the poor repair history. I have owned over ten vehicles and the only one more costly to repair and maintain was a 1973 Cheverolet Vega. I service oil at 3,000 and all other systems on a very timely basis. It has not helped. Dodge should admit this is a junk pile after 50,000 miles.
I have a 95 Intrepid bought in 1999 with 49000 miles. This car was bought for my wife to drive, since bought randomly when you would try to start the car it would die. The four way control in the streering colum broke, the fuel pump went out. Three weeks ago it over heated and blew a head gasket. Got the car back and a week later my wife was driving it and it died as she was going down the freeway back in the shop it goes. Diagnosed as needing a new long block. At first we loved the car and was planning on getting a new Intrepid. All service records on file. But with all of this happening before the car has 80,000 miles I think that an Intrepid is out of the question.
I own a 1996 Dodge Intrepid that I purchased new in 1996. I am the original owner and only have 35,000 miles on the vehicle. I have a family of 5 and do not "beat" on the car, I treat it as if I will own it forever. After 1 1/2 years (1998) the water pump went bad and had to be replaced. Last year, the Rack & Pinion steering had to be replaced, which my Dodge dealership miss diagnosed. They said I needed front end repairs, where as my own mechanic found it to be the rack & pinion steering, which is fairly common to this vehicle (and the Eagle Vision & Chrysler Concorde). Two months ago, my air conditioning went and I discovered an oil leak in the 3 spark plug tubes. When I called Chrysler, they were aware of the problem, but could do nothing for me, not warranted. I would never waste my money on another Chrysler product, would not even take it if you gave it to me. STAY AWAY FROM CHRYSLER.
I have a 96 Dodge Intepid. I have had constant repairs with this car. Once each year I have to replace the inner and outer bushings. I have replaced the Rack and Pinion 3 times. The engine overheated when the radiator leaked and did not give an overheating warning. That resulted in a new engine. I will never buy another Chrysler product again!
I have had a 1996 Intrepid for the past 1 1/2 years. I did a carfax report on the car, and it was truly a one-owner car, as was represented. The week I bought the car, with 68,000 miles on it, the water pump went bad. Not a problem, to be expected, really. From the day I got the car, this car truly must hate cold weather. It continually cuts off when idling. I hate being in traffic, because I am constantly having to restart the car. There was an awful groaning in the steering, especially from the start, that seemed to get better after a couple of minutes on the road. I had the fuel rail replaced as it was spewing gas all over the front of the engine, and now my rack and pinion is completely shot. I dreamed of owning an Intrepid forever, now I miss my very low-maintenance Toyota more and more every day. I feel that this car is very unsafe, unreliable, completely unpredictable, and a maintenance nightmare.
I own a 1993 Intrepid ES. I bought it used from a dealer and have owned it for 4 years now.
Not once have I had any problems with it and I LOVE it. I wish I could buy another exactly like this one, but Dodge went and changed the styling on it and I don't like the new improved version.
I have 107664 miles on it now and of course I will have to decide either to keep it for another year any maybe put some money into it or to turn it in on another car.
Either way I have been very satisfied with my big white Intrepid.
I have owned my 1996 Chrysler Intrepid for 1 1/2 years. I love how it handles and the power it exudes, but I do have to say that I have had nothing but problems with the car since I bought it.
Listed below are the repairs that have been made to the car during my ownership of it.
I had to replace the starter two months after I bought the car because the old one completely died.
A few months later I had to replace the linkage on the front end.
Two weeks later the air conditioner needed a freon refill due to leaking.
A Month later the battery died. I'd write this one off to normal maintenance.
3 months later, I had to put new inner and outer tie rod ends on the passenger side of the vehicle and a new inner tie rod bushing on the driver side.
4 months later, I had to replace both rear shocks because they were allowing my tires to bottom out while passing over big bumps.
Last week I learned that the air conditioner had died due to a dead compressor. After being told that this will cost me $750 to fix, I am going to roll my windows down for the rest of the summer.
My Wife's Aunt has a 1997 Intrepid. My problems would pale in comparison to the issues she has had with hers. I won't be buying another Intrepid again.
I own a 96 Dodge Intrepid ES. The car only has about 32,000 miles on it. I was happy with the car until recently. The car stalls while driving down the road, quite frightening when you have two small children in the back seat. I have taken the car to the dealer four times, but they can't find anything wrong with it. My trust in Chrysler products has been seriously shaken.
I purchased my 1996 Intrepid used, one previous owner, it was 2 years old when I bought it and had 32,000 miles on it. Within the first week of driving it I was on a road trip, about 200 miles total and around the 150 mile mark the car just stalled out and I couldn't get it started back up. I was near a restaurant when this happened so I went in, had some lunch, came back out and it started up fine. Didn't have another problem for almost year when the water pump went out on it around 50,000 miles, I had to replace the coolant tank, and the wiper blade motor as well as the shocks around this time also.
The second winter that I had the car it started overheating at random intervals and it turns out one of the cylinder heads had a flaw in in, I couldn't afford new heads so I had a buddy weld it and reseat the heads and it hasn't overheated since, but I did have to have all the seals replaced and still, to this day the thing stalls at red lights and stop signs... no dealership or mechanic I've taken the car to can tell me anything useful except that this seems to be a very common problem with the 3.5 engine. The Intrepids made around that time had either a 3.3 liter or an aluminum headed 3.5L and is seems that the 3.5 was so problem riddled that Chrysler discontinued it's use. Of course it was never recalled and they refuse to admit any fault in the matter so I'm stuck with a 'luxury sedan' that I can't drive more than 50 miles at a stretch without fear of getting stranded.
I own a 1996 Dodge Intrepid which I purchased brand new. I have been very unhappy with the reliability of this vehicle. Since I have owned it I have had to replace the water pump twice, once at 38,000 and once at 72,000 The struts had to be replaced at 70,000 Now it is making a noise when the steering wheel is being turned to the right or left. When coming to a stop and at idle the engine seems to skip. I now have 82,000 on the vehicle.
I own a 1996 Dodge Intrepid that was used with about 130,000 miles on it. I've had it about a year and have had NO trouble with it so far. It has never stalled and starts every morning no matter how cold. I drive thirty miles to school and 30 miles back five days a week in addition to all other driving I do. However, I have noticed over the last few weeks that my gas pedal must be pressed much harder than it had before, and the engine seems to jump regardless of whether I am accelerating or not. When I get out of my car I can smell the engine strongly, yet the hood is not hot. I don't know. These symptoms seem to go along with all complaints I've heard about the Intrepid. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I currently own two Dodge Intrepids, both are ES Sedans, 1993 and 1998 models. I purchased both before I realized what mistake it was. Both now have rebuilt transmissions in them. The 1998 model now has a new long block installed since the oil pump failed on it while driving down the highway. The 1993 model is front end nightmare, having both the inner and outer tie rod bushings going bad. These cars a huge headache and I can't even get rid of them since I have so much money in them. The retail and trade value is horrible since there are so many of these cars on the road. Do yourself a favor and buy foreign.
I own a 1996 Dodge Intrepid. I have put 170,000 miles on this car without a single problem. I take good care of the vehicle and do my oil and filter changes every 3 to 4000 miles. The car owes me nothing. This past weekend the water pump went and I will replace it and give the vehicle to my son and purchase another Dodge Intrepid.
I did own a 1993 Dodge Intrepid prior to this 1996 Dodge Intrepid. I had a few problems, but nothing I couldn't handle. One of the problems was that it would stall driving down the road and wouldn't start for a ten minute lag, then it would start, so I couldn't rely on it. I finally brought it to a dealership and they found the problem which was on a recall and fixed it and I had no problems from then on. I drove that 1993 Dodge Intrepid 149,500 miles before trading it in on a 1996 Dodge Intrepid.
As you can see I drive a lot, take good care of the car and I would recommend them to anyone wishing for a good reliable good looking vehicle.
I have a 96 intrepid with 105,000 miles and I love the car, but, it needs front end work, it dies at stop signs or lights, not always, but it does. I love the looks of the car and all the room, but I also have small children. after hearing some of the problems, I'm getting a little nervous to own the car. I hope the car treats me as well as I treat it. always been a Mopar fan. But don't you think they could try a little harder in the quality department? They have the coolest designs today! I'm also having power window problems, transmission slippage, and a few other little problems. It's too bad, I love the car.
