It looks solid but it's a complete tin, the hatchback version is very light, it's like having a cart joined to the car.
Performance is OK, the bushes wear out quickly and the parts are not cheap. I would rather buy a Merc as part prices are not far off.
The wishbone bushes went, the link broke.
Overall a complete hollow tin. Don't buy if you ask me. It shakes on the motorway at 90mph, when even the tyres are OK, balanced and not any mechanical fault. The reason is that the body is a light tin, it does not carry any weight behind to even the balance.
I'm sorry but I can't agree with your comments, I have owned 4 Mazda 626's and 5 Mazda 323's and have had no real faults with any of them. As for build quality, I find it excellent.
I bought a used '94 626. I have had both front axles replaced, the tires replaced, balanced three times, and still cannot get rid of a vibration from about 65 to 75. Sometimes it's worse than others.
I have a 1994 Mazda Cronos 626 LX. I found it to be a poor mechanical design with lots of body, structural and transmission problems. The only good thing about it is the engine. I will never recommend anyone to buy this car.

I hope the above comments are isolated customers- or my 626 should have fallen apart by now!
I have the '94 GLX ABS and find no rough spots aside from the head jerking 0-40, due to the great engine and tight transmission. Its smooth up to 110, and when the aeros kick in it becomes even smoother and road hugging up to its max of around 135. This was noted on a track day.
I have had caliper problems, but at 140k this is not unusual. My car used to be a rep car and had never had any problems after 135k business use. The clutch seems to slip when shifting quickly into 2nd, but only when flooring the gas.
The interior is great for the price, all electrics, quality upholstery with folding rear seat, and enough places to put spare change to pay Carol Vauderman.
All in all I find the build and mechanical quality very high on this car, and anyone who dislikes the lightweight body has issues.
I have a automatic Mazda Cronos 626 supercharged diesel and it is one of the best cars I have owned. Had to get back brake calipers which were hard to find cos it's an import but other than that no problems. I also own a v6 Ford Probe and a twin turbo Lexus Soarer. I use the mazda as my every day car cos its so reliable. I do not agree with the comments posted above. There is 150000 kilometers on clock and should keep going for another 800000 kilometers.
