1981 Volvo 240 (originally a 244DL) from Norway - Comments

"PERFECT"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gas pump.

General comments?

This car is amazing to drive!! It is a beauty! (it's styled, and modified) It was originally a 244DL with 119hp. Now it's rebuilt to a 270hp turbo intercooler. I bought it for 25000(nkr)=2800$.

I love this car! Everybody recognizes me, they're like; Oh, there's Olav. You have to see the picture of my Volvo, to fully understand the potential of your own/your future Volvo 200 series.

I've got a Volvo 850 wing, it's lowered about 8 cm, I've got a 3" exhaust, servo, huge stereo, and black windows!

The engine, as well as everything else, is 92' except some things, like the windows, mirrors, etc (98'). I'm going to buy electric windows, powered locks, sun roof, and a new styling kit.

If you would like pictures of my Volvo, specs, etc, and hear who I raced against, send me a mail on olav-x@online.no

One thing I can tell you; it's fun, when some guys have bought new cars, like the Golf GTi, and they want to race ;) they have no chance!! Actually, me and some friends burned away from a 92' Golf GTi, with a 85' Volvo 240 GL, with 119hp, but the Volvo only had three of the four cylinders working at the time (it sounded like a truck).

I LOVE VOLVO!!! It's almost better than women! ;)

I agree too, not because I'm Swedish and we made the car, but because it is so good. You will of course, as with any other car get minor faults, but these comes with every model do they not?

So forget the small annoyances, they can always be fixed quite cheaply.

Forget them because there are no major annoyances... or special problematic areas. The car was so thoroughly designed that it will last a very long time if you take care of it.

The engines are extremely robust and brilliantly uncomplicated, and if you change the oil every 1000 kms, or even better every 500 kms, it should last indefinitely. If the right care is applied, service intervals correctly upholded and rust is kept away then it will go and go and go.

These engines can be run up to 500000 km if correctly maintained.

The same can be said for the 700 and 900 series.

Good driving with your Volvo.

Peter.

Hi!

I'm the one who wrote the review.

I had a accident and crashed the car, but I've got a new car now.. Guess what brand? Volvo!

You can look at pictures here:

When I bought it->http://www.volvo-power.net/pictures/admins/dabutcher/car/242/

Now -> http://www.volvo-power.net/pictures/admins/dabutcher/car/242_2/page_01.htm.

You can read my (old) plans there, regarding the b6304f (volvo 960 3l engine), but my new plan is the volvo b36 in the 242. I will modernize the b36 into injection.. I think I'll manage 220hp / 350nm. The NM is what gives you acceleration, not the hp.

Long live volvo!

Hi. I've been driving an '81 Volvo 245 GL (wagon-estate) around the South of France for the last few years since moving down from Paris. Since buying it, I've replaced the suspension (a key move), as well as the stick shift knob with overdrive button and tightened everything down below up again. I also changed the fluid in the transmission and the difference was incredible! Perhaps the most important thing which I have done has been to convert it from leaded gasoline to unleaded. I decided to give one of those Brochet fuel catalysts a try (for 70 GBP) that I ordered over the internet. Believe me, those things do indeed work and are worth every single £ --and very much so for deisels too. I stopped using leaded gas as soon as I let it fall down into the gas tank and the car has run better than ever with no valve problems now for 5 years. It has far kilometrage, ever clean injectors, quieter idle, etc... I also recently paid to have a complete electrical cleaning and tune up. WHAT a difference that made! My 23 year old Volvo with 259000 KMs now smoothly idles at a perfect 6.4. Unbeleivable. I recommend finding a good auto-boat electrical mechic do this for you. I'm now thinking of giving it a paint job. I might as well. I'm never going to sell my car until it is destroyed in an accident. I love that thing.

Hi!

It's me again!

Now I have updates with my 242 DL 1980 model.

I have bought a b6304f from a 1995 model 960.

The engine performs 204hp/267nm with cat, and I've been told that the cat removes 15% of the power.

As my car is 80', I don't need a cat to pass emission controls. My car has passed 300.000km some time ago, and my current engine is still up and running..

I think this car will live longer than me!

Super car!!

Yeah I love Volvo's too, but what cars had the b36 in it, that has become my engine of choice.

Hi, it's me again.

I'm the one who wrote the original review.

I have been driving my car for a long time now, and no big problems have arised. I had to swap the bearing on the axle connected to the transmission, also I've swapped some parts for the breaker ignition, like the rotor, etc.

I also had a problem that I broke the handle for opening my window, but changing the mechanism is very easy, I guess it took me 10 minutes. I also got the part cheap, as always when you buy parts for Volvo. I also had my engine-mounts worn out, so the engine was resting on the front swaybar.. I swapped for Volvo 240 Diesel mounts, as they are more rigid. Now my car does not shake as much, as well as there is less noise and vibration.

I will soon swap for the Volvo 960 engine, the B6304F. I will use a Corvette 5-speed transmission, with a reinforced clutch that can handle 600hp. The transmission bell-housing is already adapted to my 960 engine, so then it's just some small work with the engine-mounts and I need to shorten a volvo axle and weld it together with a corvette axle. The guy who I'm buying the transmission is the same guy I bought the engine from. He will also make me a new axle for very little money.

This week, I'll also get some rust removed on my car. I'll also swap some parts I don't really know if is rusted, but I think since I'll keep this car forever, it's good to swap before the rust is visible.

As always, volvo is the best :-) very easy to fix and the parts are cheap and often interchangeable between different models.

- Tyre from Falken rear 235/17/45 front 215/17/45

- exhaust from extractor to silencer 3" straight pipe and

my silencer from H.K.S super dragger 4"

You're going with T6? You will need new transmition too. FWD engine will fit on RWD Volvo with mustang T5 or T56 transmition with no problems. I would go with T56, because it is 6-speed. Oh, and at that power you'll need to upgrade your drive-train (i recommend the M3 drive-train).
