2005 Honda S2000 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Honda Excellence"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing.

General comments?

It has the same precise, direct and responsive handling of an evo, but without the hefty running costs. Granted its not as quick as an evo viii (my previous car) or practical, but the money I'm saving on running costs makes it well worth it.

The engine is a thing of amazement, the noise it makes at high rpms is so addictive. The car just feels special, I can't put my finger on it.

Never have I had so many memorable country drives in a car. I am thankful to Honda for making such a good car.

I'm willing to bet you would mess yourself if you ever drove any sports car with more than 4 cylinders.

I just went from a owning a C5 Corvette to buying an 05 S2000. The vette has tons of power, but the S2000 is just a lot more fun to drive - period. It is a real drivers car.

S2000s are great and everything, but a slicky tuned integra vtec or a stock type R beats the s2k beauty.

What is truly amazing about the S2000 is the driver/car connection you get when carving up your favorite mountain roads, snick that lever down a gear and you hear the engine scream to 8000 rpm as you start to drift around the corner. You can tune most econo boxes to go faster, but you get all that performance in a stock S2000 with a rag top and a factory warranty and none of the racer boy attention from the law. Plus, add on any aftermarket power boosters at the dealership and everything they install is covered under either the manufacturers or their own warranty. Now that is my idea of smart racing.

And slightly tuning the s2k with an exhaust, cold air intake, chip, you get under 4,7sec 0 to 62 which means you can keep up with Ferrari 360 Modena (4,5sec 0 to 62)... and I didn't even mention the top speed!

"and I didn't even mentioned the top speed!"

S2k's are pretty bad in the top speed dept. Because they don't have enough torque to pull higher gears, the 4 cylinder tends to run out of steam early due to the necessary short gearing.

This car is a perfect example of why horsepower means nothing without torque. Remember torque allows you to pull higher gears, and when coupled with the right ammount of torque, RPM's give you a higher top speed. Horsepower doesn't actually exist, it's just a made up figure to show you how an engine applies it's torque throughout the RPM range. And while this car certainly has the RPMs, it just doesn't have the torque to get to them in higher gears, thus giving it a bad top end.

I have a 1.6 vti, has little torque, but has more than your average 1.6 and flies all the way to 145mph, gets there very quickly.

Unless your car is stripped to weigh less than 1500 pounds, or has a big turbo on it, a 1.6 litre engine cannot physically make enough torque to pull your car up to 145 mph very quickly, maybe eventually, but not very quickly. You would have to wait quite awhile for your engine to spin up to high enough rpm's in a high enough gear to get you to such a speed unless you had a lot of torque or a very light car.

If it's says 145mph on the clock, its probably doing about 130mph. Everyone knows that the speedometer figures on many cars are very optimistic when you get up to higher speeds.

I love the S2000, and all Honda VTEC-powered cars. I have a 1999 Civic Jordan, based on the 1.6 VTi (160bhp stock). Granted, VTEC engines have low torque figures on paper; they are relatively small displacement engines with high horsepower output after all. On the road, they are really good and provide a very unique and rewarding driving experience.

You do have to get the revs up to get into the powerband and to take advantage of the high lift long duration cam profile, but with the short ratio gearbox, lightweight flywheel and ability to take high revs on a regular basis without sacrificing any reliability, lack of torque isn't a big problem. Sure it would be nice to have more torque, but the cars certainly are not undriveable on a daily basis and they do have enough torque for climbing hills, etc.

Compare the civic 1.6 to the average 1.6 and they have a lot more torque, same goes with the 2.0 S2000

i have a 4 door saloon vti. I have had lots of cars, but for some reason I always want to go back to the vtec very addictive

PS with an induction kit, these machines produce an awesome sound.

People: It is called an "aftermarket turbo kit" and is made by inlinepro or any other company. With the stock forged internals on the 2.2 version in the S2000, you can obtain about 400 rwhp with a 3mm spacer head gasket on pump gas. Your tq should be somewhere around 350 or 360 which is enough to get you deep into the 150's if not 160's (quickly). I'm talking about running '03 cobras and not losing; or if you do lose, it isn't by much. And honestly, I don't know anyone whom does a majority of their driving at that speed, so ultimately this is pointless. And by the way, turbo S2000 will blow your socks off as far as driving enjoyment (if you have never experienced it).
