2005 SsangYong Musso 290 Sport Double Cab 4x4 from South Africa - Comments

"With these changes I am very much satisfied with the vehicle as a package for what you pay"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The body panels are very soft and dent easily. Still need to find ways of protecting load body on top.

The clock is a disaster. Had it replaced under warranty. Still not working. I tried tightening the electric plug at back and seemed to have helped (for a while).

The radio can GO! - Tape decks don't do it!

Off-Roading the departure angle (load body over-hang) is non-existent and one needs to continuously take care, got some "brandy" marks on the sides.

General comments?

Bought my Musso (3rd one) in May 2005 in Pretoria, RSA. Done 12000km which included highway, clogging through traffic in morning/afternoon and some off-roading.

Very impressed with smooth comfortable ride. Fuel consumption good. Ride comfort good. Off-roading excellent when compared to other open differential 4x4's. If you do not have one get one...

Overall:

Made some changes and additions to the vehicle to suite my need. This include:

(a) Fitting longer coil springs at back to stop sagging when carrying a load. In addition I turned up the front torsion bars, if too high one gets a very uncomfortable ride. Had to lower it. Stands a bit nose down, but comfortable and balance nicely when towing or load on back.

(b) Fitted after market shocks. Did not make much difference on ride comfort though scored more wheel travel as they are longer.

C) Fitted an ARB Air locker in the back. Had some difficulties as specs on diff changed from previous model and the locker did not. The guys did a great job and it makes a huge difference as the traction control requires a too high speed over rocky terrain and does not work if one wheel in the air.

(d) Made a protection bar below the back to protect rear, not tested yet.

Will definitely get another one after this one, hopefully they will bring it out soon with the 270XDI machine in the near future.

It's a hard choice to make. To buy another musso or not? I already own five mussos and one rexton. The musso that's up for sale is a 2003 model, diesel, turbo with intercooler. very nice green colour body is dent free and leather seats. And its manual. What shall I do because it will only cost me 2300 English pounds? Steve Diston, Fiji Islands.

I own a Ssangyong Musso sports dual-cab Ute and have done 20,000 with it. First off the good points. The styling is different, plenty of rear leg room (for a dual-cab Ute), it has enough power, good fuel economy and its affordable with reasonable off road ability. The turbo has already failed once. The gear shifts are very far apart and the clutch travel is huge as well as having gear ratios which are too short for Australian conditions or freeway cruising. The load area is small because of the good leg room. The rear sags a lot under load, but I corrected this by installing airbag suspension. I would recommend spending a bit more and buy a Rodeo or Navara.

I reckon for the price and what you get the new musso sports is the way to go. Sure it might have a few problems here and there, but all cars do especially new and late model ones. Navara is not the way to go. My brother in law has a late model one and it is awful. Holden Rodeo seems OK, but I would not buy a Holden anyway. The new hilux and triton need to be covered with a paper bag they are that unsightly and the diesel Hilux is suposed to guzzle too much fuel. Musso Sports is as close as you are going to get to a Benz ute as possible. So, either way you com up short no matter what you buy!

Just traded a one year old Holden Adventra on a 2006 Musso Sport 290. So many problems with the Holden that I don't have room to detail them all. Start with a replaced transmission after 6 weeks, new diff and air-conditioning at 11 months, then everything else is minor.

The ride on the Musso is fantastic. It travels well on the highway, and allowing for the higher revs of the four cylinder against a V6 it doesn't have to work hard at it.

Interior features are also comparable; the Adventra doesn't even have a warning light/alarm to indicate a door is ajar or open when the engine is running. Semi-climate control works very well, seating comfort and leg room exceptional.

The only problems found in the past week since we bought our Musso are:

- Yes, the CLOCK. To be replaced.

- Rattles in the dash. Complete dash complex to be replaced

- Valve rattle/jitter on a valve just to the rear of the turbo. Not being a mechanic, I can't give details. It will be replaced.

Overall, I am very pleased. I have previously had a Holden Rodeo as well and was happy enough with it. However, like an earlier writer here, I will not have another Holden, but will DEFINITELY have another Musso.

Ssangyong Musso Twin cab Sports Ute 2005-06 Diesel Turbo intercooled - has anyone experienced the engine missing when stopping in traffic. Feels like a mis-fire, idling rough. Intermittent, and when we take it back to the dealer it never occurs. Dealer can't find problem 'cause the engine management diagnostics doesn't show up this problem. It's really frustrating and questioning my decision to buy another Musso
