"Absolute Junk"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

We bought our 94 JGC Laredo less than a month ago, it is older, but all of a sudden four days ago, we went to go to work, turned the key, and nothing happened. No click, clunk, or grind, just nothing. My boyfriend replaced the battery, starter, relay, positive wire from starter to the battery, ignition switch, checked the alternator, and the neutral safety switch (or PNP). None of the above. Can someone tell me exactly what that leaves for possible problems? It can be jumped with a screwdriver from the battery to the solenoid directly, but that means climbing under the vehicle any time we need to go anywhere! HELP!!

General comments?

We are at our wits end on this one, he has spent 6 hours a day under that thing for 4 days, both of us missing work, but spending money to fix it and it's still not fixed. I as well sold my 99 Honda Civic DX for this piece of junk b/c we needed 4wd. HUGE mistake! If your considering, Don't DO IT!!!

It may be an immobiliser problem which may explain why it can be started by manually operating the starter solenoid. Older immobilisers act on the starter circuit only whereas more modern ones also act on the fuel pump also (the engine can be cranked by shorting the solenoid, but will not fire because there is no fuel being pumped).

Not easy to solve unless you can locate the immobiliser and figure out which wires do which.

Your going to blame the vehicle and not the previous owners who maybe fouled something up, also.

Come on! It's 11 years old and I will bet it has over 165 miles. If it doesn't that's great.

Vehicles are mechanical and I do not care who builds it,

you will see failures.

I am not sure if 1994 Jeep vehicles had Engine Immobiliser

technology, but it is good logic.

Try Pushing the gear shift forward, and holding it, while you

turn the key.

I have this problem. If you think about it Great Anti-Theft Device!

I had the same problem with my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee periodically. But today I could do nothing to get it to start. I then read the last comment that said to "push shifter forward and hold while turning the key". I did this, the shifter unlocked I moved it to Drive and back to park and turned the ingnition switch. The car started right up. So try it, it works.

July 2006

1994 Jeep Cherokee Limited 5-door 4-liter petrol auto 4x4 bought in Greece has an immobilizer-only (not anti-theft) which is apparently a button taped in place on the dash. This proves to be a watch-type battery, voltage rubbed off. I can only find 3-volt batteries this size and suspect it may be a special 1.5 battery, and am terrified of it wearing out if so. I haven't an owners manual and wish I had. Any advice?

I will agree with others. It has 184***+ miles on it! It's gonna have issues. The engines on these cars will drive you forever! I own one myself. Same year, same everything. Only has 59000. Previous owner was my father. It's all about who took care of it before. Do not blame the Jeep for that. They are arguably in the top 5 of most dependable cars.

I bought a 94 JGC Laredo a couple months ago for my daughter. It is older, but all of a sudden last night, my daughter went to practice, turned the key, and nothing happened. No click, clunk, or grind. As a single mom I cannot find a mechanic with any insight. I will replace it myself if I knew what the problem was?? Can someone tell me exactly what the possible problem might be?

To the lady who bought the 94 Laredo for her daughter:

Try pushing the gear shift lever all of the way forward and holding it while you try to start it. Sometimes the gear shift is not far enough forward to engage the safety switch that allows the vehivle to start. This happens to me at certain times, but it has not caused any other problems.

I have a 94 JGC with a 5.2 engine. I came across the problem of turning the key and nothing happening. I tried holding the gear shift forward, but that does not work.

Any other ideas?

Been reading a lot of comments about how great the 94 Jeep Laredo is...

Bought mine brand new in April 94, worked great for first 4 years. Kept up with the maintenance schedule, made sure everything working fine. In 98 it started falling apart. Everything under the hood (except engine itself) replaced at least once!

At 74,000 miles the tranny went for the first of two times. Pretty much the only thing that never needed replacing in 7 years was the muffler.

Was driving it down the highway to the dealer in April 2001 to trade it in and the engine blew (at 95,000 miles)... had to have it towed to the dealer. I'm probably going to hear that a) it was a lemon or b) bad mechanic, but explain that to the 4 other people in my office and a close friend who had similar problems with theirs!! Since then I've been happy to recommend the car... as a 3 or 4 year lease!

It is most likely the Security System which came standard on even the base model grand. There is an immpbilizer which will prevent the vehicle from starting. This is also activated if the vehicle is low on oil. A good technician (not a shadetree but a real tech) could most likely analyse and find the trouble in less than an hour.
