2000 Nissan Maxima GLE from North America - Comments

My 2000 Nissan Maxima has caused me nothing, but problems since I purchased it in 2003. A few months after I first got it, I had to have my muffler replaced.

Shortly thereafter, I had to get my front brakes and tail lights fixed.

My most recent issue with this poorly-built vehicle is the catalytic converter. Symptoms that I experienced with the catalytic converter: NO Acceleration when you press the gas pedal. Put it this way: My 2000 Nissan Maxima forgot how to shift!

The 2000 Nissan Maxima is a major headache! Stay away from the 2000 Nissan Maxmima if you like reliability.

How did the previous owner care for the car in the first 80k miles? When you bought this car, it was no spring chicken. Maybe some of the problems are from damage or abuse from the previous owner?

You bought a used vehicle. It now has 115,000 miles and youre complaining about replacing taillights? Sounds to me like your car has needed the usual maintenance for its mileage, if not LESS than the usual. Nothing on a car lasts forever and wear and tear will take its toll after 80,000 miles. I can't believe youre considering this car unreliable.

It sounds to me like this was a pretty good car (and this from someone who even detests Japanese cars!). Mufflers wear out and you replace them. So what? Brakes wear out and you replace them. So what? Bulbs burn out and you replace them. So what? A car isn't like your DVD player, where you just keep hitting the ON button and never do anything to take care of it.

You can't buy a car with 80k and not have it gone over thoroughly by your mechanic. Normal wear items are just that. Did you think you bought a new car?

I have a 2001 Maxima (GLE) that I bought new and still love it. The only problem was a radio that lost the display light and was fixed under warranty. I have 40,000 miles now and still love it. I drive it hard every day. The Bose and leather int. make a very nice ride of it. I also added a highly recommended cold air kit for a bit more power and a deeper sound. No sedan within $10,000 can beat it for features, comfort, or speed.

BTW, I also bought a new decked out '87 Maxima, they rock too!

Have to wonder how it was taken care of from the previous owner (s).

I have a 2000 Maxima and I love it. It has just rolled over 40k miles and all I have done is replace the oil on a regular basis. I also had an Airamar application put on the paint job when I bought the car brand-new and except for just a couple faint scratches here and there, the car looks almost new still. I have a co-worker who has the same model car and heres looks awful. She comments me on my car all the time.

So, a lot of things have to be considered, especially how someone takes care of something. There are lemons out there.

I am 37 and have wanted a Maxima for many years. I finally got one, my first new car, and am very happy with it.

I have 2000 Maxima GXE with convenience package. Bought it new. It has 72K miles and yes, once the light bulb had to be replaced. Recently ignition coil went and it did cost $75 - I bought coil from a dealer and replaced it myself. The bracket on the pipe before the muffler rusted out, muffler pipe rusted out in the place where it connects to pipe, the heat shield fell off the converter. If you run to mechanic each time something small like that happens- you feel like you wasting lots of money. Those are annoying problems (especially when you see the mufflers being brand new after 5 years and the connection to the pipe totally rusted through). Now I got "Check Engine" light "on" suggesting that catalytic converter is not working. Nissan could have done better job taking care of details, but generally the car is not bad. (I have a friend driving 1999 Camry and he has no problems at all).

Sounds like you bought your Maxima on a private sale, a Nissan dealer does a certification before letting the used vehicles leave the lot. I've got 130K on my 2000, and still going like new. The only things I replaced over the years were a few sensors, tires, lamps, etc. More than I can a say for my North American heap.

I have never owned a Maxima, but have had sentras, trucks and Pathfinders by Nissan and I find it hard to believe that anyone has had problems with one they could really complain about. Mufflers, brakes and bulbs are all throw-away items, and as others have mentioned there is a lot to consider when buying a used car if you can't get the complete maintenance history of it. Maybe the previous owner was hard on the car, its still a Nissan and they are built to give you more than you would ever ask.

The flange connecting the muffler to the exhaust pipe is KNOWN to rot on these cars, but who cares? I sure don't! Like a previous comment said, If the owner BEFORE YOU did not take care of the car, it's obviously going to have problems. There are people that beat on their cars, and then sell it without even thinking of fixing what they broke in the first place.

Stop complaining. At least you have a car. Some people don't!

I bought a used 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE in April and it had 84k miles on it. It now has over 100k. I absolutely love driving my car and it has been awesome. I know I'm going to have to do some costly maintenance stuff on it, but that's what you get when you buy such a "used" car. It runs awesome though and I love it!

I have a 1990 Nissan Maxima with 376,000 miles on it and I came to this site because I am going to buy a 2000. The Nissan Maxima is very cheap in maintance compared to other vehicles. When I blew the head gasket on mine it cost 500 dollars to fix. On my dads 1996 Cadillac SLS it cost 2000 dollars. So compared to other car companies it is very cheap.
