Steering made a funny noise, but was arranged by the Tata dealer under guarantee.
I previously drove the TATA Safari 1998 model. I just upgraded to the new Safari DICOR, which is available in Italy. It's an impressive 4X4, will never change to another company.
The improvements never stop over previoos models. Engine from 2.0TD to 3.0 common rail turbo diesel, and it's very smooth and quiet.
Reverse camera in the mirror, dual air conditioning, leather seats, plastics are very good quality. I drive a Mercedes as taxi driver and the interior quality is almost the same.
So far I had it for a month and half, and have had no trouble.
Anyone who wants to buy a Safari, wait until this model comes out in your country.
You actually found the Safari quiet? Good it is, quiet it isn't. I have a VXi version I bought this August, and I have to say it is VERY good, perfect for Indian conditions. The ride is the best you can have for any vehicle for this price point, and the seating comfort is top notch. The DVD and rear view camera helps too. And I just love to sink in that black leather, on those huge comfy seats. I have a 2WD, which is very good too. This engine is by no means modern, and the roots can be found in the ancient 3.0 L engine found on the Tata 407 light truck.
The new SAFARI DICOR is really amazing. You get tremendous pleasure when you ride this vehicle. There is always one thing that comes in your mind while driving. Keep pushing the vehicle as hard as you can, it has still something more left to be explored. I just love my SAFARI.
Safari Dicor is wonderful. Good value for money. Why we need to pay for big tags.
The Tata Safari is amazing. With less money paid, you get the Safari which is equivalent to the Land-Cruiser Prado. Though we find parking problem for the HUGE Safari, it is very reliable for long journeys.
Hey, how can you people say that tata safari dicor is on par with the toyota land cruiser prado... did you people ever tried a prado... I hope you didn't... it is just like a heaven and hell's difference... safari dicor is good, but not anyway near the those japanese monsters... it is just a child to those japanese big bros... if you compare features and conveniences you will see a low graded prado is much better than a safari dicor... to people like us, engine is the most important thing... if there is no good engine then there is no good car, if there is no good car then what are use of those luxuries like dvd, rear camera, leather upholstery and so on... think man think...
Prado?? Oohh come on!! You have to compare everything the Quality and the PRICE!! If you work it out, you will find that the Safari is better when it comes to value for money. I have a 98 Safari (the first model that came out) and I will not change it until the dicor comes out in the UK. TATA is growing faster and faster every year, while big companies like Mercedes, VW, Fiat are all doing horribly when it comes to selling cars. Who knows, maybe TATA will one day become the rich man's car...
I have owned both a Tata Safari and a Land Cruiser Prado at the same time in Southern India. A quick recap (after about 65,000kms) :
Ride and Comfort: Advantage Safari
Engine, transmission and Handling: Advantage Prado!
Quality, Fit and Finish: Advantage Prado
Price: Advantage Safari.
The two vehicles sell at quite different price points in India, A top of the line Tata Safari 4WD retails for about $ 28,000 and a Petrol Prado retails for $ 85,000 (Though you could get a 3-4 year old diesel auto Prado for about $45,000)
Tha Safari would be an excellent buy if Tata added an autobox option. If you have cash to burn, look no further than a diesel Prado, if you are being thrifty: buy the Safari, you will not be too badly disappointed!
The new safari dicor is the best. I have the new safari vx model, I bought it for 11 lakhs, its cool, it has a blaupunkt dvd player, LCD screens on the driver seats. There is a camera
behind in the car. The seatings are good. I like the new alloy wheels. Before I had a TATA safari 98 model it had a funny noise in the steering wheel, now its all different and cool. And the new light gold body colour is also good
I love My new TATA SAFARI DICOR.
Faheem.
The improvements tata made in this car are impressive, totally different vechile. the 3litre engine makes a huge difference. hope tata keeps it up.
May the force be with you TATA owners.
I have prado since 2 year today I drive my friend safari dicor and I was amaze.that an indian company can made this type of car it is so comfortable easy to drive. I drive first time tata car and I am happy by their work. now I will buy a tata safari dicor. rahul.
Currently I have a range of cars starting from,
Tata Sierra to Toyota Prado, which includes Safari also (2000 model).
Last week I drove one new Dicor and it was really great... If you compare the luxury with value for money, I always prefer Safari Dicor.. Tony, Cochin, Kerala.
I always wanted to buy a SUV, after test driving Scorpio, Endeavour and the new safari Dicor. I found safari is the best choice to go for... its amazing...gud space, gud power, gud safety features...well, next day I got my new dicor... the entry model is really a value for money... scorpio is jst a show vehicle, bad space and it jumps like anything especially in the back... i dint like it too. And you get 2 dicors for an entry model of Endeavour.. I love my dicor, its simply the best... I would recommend it for all suv lovers.
The Safari is set to become even more better and value for money. A new 2.2L DICOR engine is being introduced. It will be launched in Europe and SE Asia first, in a few weeks time. I do not know about the Indian launch though.
The new engine will give the massive Safari some much needed torque though.
I am a big fan of tata safari and wanting to buy one for quite sometime, but back of my mind I am always hearing about maintenance problems that the safari has. I am not sure if DICOR version is really reliable and hence has resolved most of the so called reliability/maintenance issues. I understand that it is great value for money and very comfortable. But having said that can I expect the 2.2L that was first shown in the Bologna motor show to address my reliablity/maintenance concern? Has anybody an idea about the improvments?
For the same price in India you can get a Honda city/Hyundai verna/Toyota Innova, so will Safari still be a good buy in terms of reliability/safety/comfort/longevity/maintenance?

Well, the above mentioned cars cannot beat the Safari on safety, comfort (actually, nothing can beat it unless you double the price range). Part for part, Tata Safari much will be cheaper than the Toyota.
But the Toyota quality control is much better than Tata. Still, as even dealers will admit, the Innova is not as tough and reliable as the Qualis. Search for Toyota D-4D engine problems on the internet and you will understand what I am talking about.
That said, the Innova is less likely to leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. On the other hand, due to its outstanding underpinnings, the Safari will get you in and out of places the Innova can only dream of.
The Innova is also more driveable. That's why it is so popular even with women.
If you are looking for comfortable, reliable transport for 7 or more people, go for the Innova. If you are looking for a hobby vehicle (or a second vehicle) which gives you unparalleled comfort and brilliant highway cruising ability, get the Safari.
About the 2.2L DICOR, if the vehicle is launched right now (ie, in february or march) the best time would be to buy it in December. Why become Tata's testing partner?
