2003 Hyundai Coupe from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Waste of money, a complete dog of a sportscar"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Where do I start? The car has had a catalogue of errors.

Windscreen wash-wipe tank leaks, within hours of filling washer fluid it's empty again.

Dashboard lights intermittently fail.

Speedometer badly inaccurate.

Had a major tyre blowout despite the tires only being about 1/3 of the way through their expected life.

Electric Windows Stick.

Gearbox makes crunching and whirring noise and mechanics can't work out why.

V6 noisier than it should be, suspected fuel pump leak.

General comments?

First of all do not be fooled into thinking that you are buying a fast car. Despite it's huge 2.7 V6 engine it only produces a highly inefficient 165bhp and to get that you really have to thrash it's pathetic engine.

It's not much quicker than my Saxo VTS, with a less-than-average top speed of 133mph. What a terrible waste of money.

I can't get in touch with the main dealership half the time with the problems listed above and all the mechanics I've spoken to say the Coupe is a good-looking deathtrap.

It's unreliable, it's not very fast, and it DRINKS FUEL. I can swear to you that I have been overtaken on the motorway by boy racers in hot hatches.

The leather seats are uncomfortable and the dashboard switches confusing and unclear. The stupid roof shape makes it impossible to sit adults in the back.

You'd think given a large V6 and a reasonably light bodyshell, a regularly serviced Coupe like mine would be a fast reliable car. Unfortunately it's neither, I hate this car and I'm stuck with it.

You are missing the Alpine Supercharger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfND7RdAx8c&search=Tiburon%20Supercharged.

That will get you up to near 300HP, M3 beating performance

Almost all boyracer hatches are heavily modified :)

About the other problems, yours may be a bit Lemon.

Mine is 2.0, no issues.

Then again, BMW repairs range in the thousands of dollars...

I don't agree with your comment I have a 2.0 coupe and I seem to have major issues with similar problems to the above comment from yours.

I look after my coupe, but this car is awful.

Wait and see yourself, then you will know who really is the 'LEMON' in this case.

Korean cars are just stupid cars, stick to Japanese cars.

The little money you save buying a

Korean car, be prepared to spend more on repairs. Just buy

a reliable Japanese car.

Hyundai coupe is meant to be known for fuel economy car (not anymore) what is happening??? Just Shocking, cheap plastic car that needs to be recycled.

Hyundai is a disaster!!!

Mazda or Toyota is my pick for good cars

I test drove one of these after I fancied a change from my clio sport.

It looked beautiful and at low revs the engine also sounded very nice and smooth. It felt quite torquey too at low revs, punchier than the power figure suggested. However, you are correct when you say that this is anything but a fast car. Overall it was pretty sluggish and nowhere near as fast as my clio was. In fact one of my mates had a Mk1 Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SE and that felt just as fast as this one I drove.

I also felt as if it was a big heavy lumering beast. It felt more like a repmobile than a coupe to drive. I didn't think it was any more enjoyable than the Vectra GSI I drove before that, however, the Vectra was faster, but not as good looking.

The interior quality was terrible. Despite leather, everything looked cheap and nasty, what a gloomy interior.

If I had got one of these, I would have stripped it down to get rid of some weight, and carried some serious modifications to boost handling, brakes and power. However, then it wouldn't be so cheap any more. And if you are going to go to all of the trouble of doing that you might as well just buy something like an Integra which has it all done for you.
