"Thriller for under a K!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

How long have I got?

There was a rattle on the front nearside door. I later found out that rattles are what the GT is all about.

The brakes were shocking..... I nearly crashed driving it away from the garage. They needed replacing straight away.... which was NOT cheap! The drums needed doing as well. The grinding noise was traced to a wheel-bearing that was repaired with a second-hand part, which saved me about £160.

The electrics are ALWAYS playing up... but I find that a quirk of the car!

And there are a multitude of niggles and knocks.... rusting around the filler-cap being an annoyance... flimsy doorlocks are another... BUT overall, I love the car. It's the best thing to come out of France since Brigite Bardot.... apart from their football team of the last two years, of course!

General comments?

The GT is an honest little car. It was designed with weight saving techniques, and that is why the car is as robust as Kate Moss!

But, it's that same reason why the car is a rocket.... I used to have a Pug 205 GTi 1.6, and the AX feels quicker..... although it doesn't handle as well.... but for a skinny-tired little aluminium boneshaker, it goes very, very well indeed!

I am hoping to trade mine in ASAP and get the GT2 or the GTi..... with a lowered, Koni sprung chassis... some fatter, wider rubber..... and a K&N.... and a good exhaust...... and then we'll see if it can corner like the Pug!

Until then, I'll happily make do with booting it into a corner, and holding on till the exit!

Hello, I am a AX owner myself, and 2 thumbs very positively up =), the electrics are "shocking" (sorry about the pun, but I couldn't resist), and you do go round corners on your door.

More than one other person in with you and the wheels slowly grind away at the arches. BUT, I've got a 1.1 TRE, I've had it at 100mph, with 4 other people in it, and a boot full on the way back from Glastonbury, and I am proud to say that I've overtaken a Lamborghini, a Porsche 944, souped up Novas, Pugs and Golfs, and in my year of having it, only 5 cars have overtaken me!!

I'm soon getting a new (2nd hand) car, a Citroen AX GT 1.4 Sportif with quad pipes, K&N, lowered, full body kit, alloys, straight through exhaust system off a mate (we have had it to 135mph =)), so a definite YES in my book.

My other favorate cars include: Renault 5 GT, Pug 205 1.6 GTi, Golf mark 1, AC Cobra, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911 Turbo, and a good trashed Escort.

I'm also planning on doing up an AX GT for rallying, so Saxo's watch out, and watch this space.

Tom

I own a 91' AX GT Sportif and there's no way it will do 135mph.... as mine is tweaked... and I can't beat 112mph... check out my review...

Forget Nova's, get an AX GT.

Well... I didn't realise there were so many AX GT fans out there when I posted my review! I regularly check back to look at how the car is reviewed, cos I love mine!

135 mph does seem a bit hopeful... I was at a GT show at Thruxton, and saw a 155bhp GT... the car was almost unrecognizable as an AX, and the amount of work that had gone into it was scary!

Mine too is a 91 Sportif, and I've just had a front ender... I need two new wings, bonnet, metal mounting panel, front bumper, lights, radiator, and skirt... so if anyone knows of a reliable, cheap GT parts/breaker in the North East, then post a message!

Also... my car is almost standard, but my alloys are a bit manky and minging... so apart from blasting them, what can I do?

What wheels can I fit, cause three studs ain't common... and if I keep the original alloys, what rubbber can I use, cause Michelins are £70 a go!

HELP!!!!!!!

Gary (this was my review!)

135mph is definitely possible, I own a 1.4 GT 500, and I love it.

Mine has a K&N, Janspeed exhaust and manifold, ported, polished and gas flowed head, a set of Weber IDF carbs, and a Piper cam. Also a lightened flywheel, self made out of titanium, handy being a fitter/turner.

Better brakes (a must). Better handling by a full Koni kit, a strut brace, and a thicker anti roll bar (also a must, dramatically reduces understeer), also poly bushes are very good.

Had 138mph out of mine, possible to get more, I ran out of road, it was still pulling too.

After these mods, get to a rolling road and get it set up properly. With my setup you're talking 128bhp and waving goodbye to almost all 150bhp 2 litre saloons, e.g. Cavalier GSi's!

ONE GREAT MOTOR!

Hi. What can I say about the Citroen ax? I'm on my 4TH ax and absolutely love them! It started as a 1ltr elation, but now sports a 1.4 306 tu engine which I fitted myself! I've also fitted musketier bumpers, alien skirts and arches. Its running on 15inch bk wheels with Yoko rubber. I've sorted the handling with a set of g-max gas shocks and chassis dynamics springs and top and bottom strut braces. the windows are tinted and I've also fitted dtm mirrors, bee sting, green filter and de-cat pipe with stainless back box. eletric windows, late spec gt interior and sony sounds also installed by myself. As always there is more to come when funds allow! People think I'm mad modifying an ax in this day and age, but I just can't give it up! I love the lightwieght build, agile handling, angular unique looks and comfortable driving position. All of these things make up for temperament of this quirky french classic! Even when things do go wrong, I still can't bring myself to hate it! No modern car will ever have as much character! long live the ax!

I have owned three AX'S and love them. My first was a GT 500 Witch clocked up well over 150,000 miles be for I pasted it on. I now have two, 1.4 D And a 1.5 D. Both are great cars, They just keep going. The 1.5 D tows a micro caravan witch I made for the job. Being a diesel it tows great. For all there little ways I would still recomend it to any one.

The AX GT has 85 brake horse power and 85lbft of torque.

With a filter and carb jetting kit, you can get 90bhp and around 95-100lbft.

I own a mk1 white gt has a stainless scorpion mid-section and rear box standard manifold and standard down pipe and a pipercross air filter. no jets changed just spent a little time setting up the ignition timing. has 14" three stud and I've had 123mph out of mine on the flat reving at 6900rpm. that was taken using my road angel and my tomtom and my speedo said exactly the same until i converted to 4 stud so 135 on a gt gear box is impossible cause you'll be bouncing the valve's. any way for 4 stud conversions I've used vtr front legs vts drilled grooved discs and calipers put vtr ball joints in my ax bottom arms as gt one's are smaller my gt strut top mounts on the vtr legs, gt shafts fit vtr/s legs so no need to change. rear axle I used a vtr with drums instead of discs. lowered the front with spax springs didn't need to change the shocks as there rated for a heavier saxo front end so don't get the usual bounce with only putting springs on, and lowered the rear torsion bar 3 splines 60mm. and all works fine.
