I bought my lumina in july of 2005 for $3,000. The head gaskets are gone $400 the back door is rusted to heck the hood has rust the plastic interior is warped the airbags have malfunctioned $200 the radiator fluid is disepearing and is not in the engine and the radiator is new $100 and the radiator fan has gone $50.00 out a water cooling sensor went out a good $50.00 along with the fuel filter $6.00oh and the paint on the bumber is peeling like sheets of paper and the gas tank is rusted to heck and back Iam Getting rid of this junker before anything else goes bad. Iam getting me a Toyota Tacoma With 30 miles per gallon compared to my 22 miles per gallon.

I had the Lumina as a "starter car", and yes all the things you described about it were true. Now I'm a Ford guy, but I had to start somewhere and the Lumina was it.

Where do I start about that hunk of junk.. The engine was so gutless it had trouble reaching 90mph! My 4 banger Toyota has more guts than this thing. That's the last Chevy product I've ever driven and probably will be my last. Oh yeah, that was 5 years ago and it's sitting in my back yard as a lawn ornament (tranny gave out).

For whatever it's worth, I own a 1996 Lumina that has 188,000

miles and other than routine maintenance I have had ZERO problems with it. On the other hand, I also own a 2000 Toyota Tacoma that hs 68,000 miles and has gone through two head gaskets, an alternator, rattles and noises too numerous to list, the upholstery is cheap and the seams are all split, etc., etc... If I were you I'd stick with your Lumina!

Maybe yours was treated badly by a previous owner. They are very good cars, I see a lot of them used in taxi fleets which should say something right there.

I have a 1995 Lumina that I love dearly. I am at present looking to replace it - we bought it in 1999 used, paid $10k at the time. Other than regular maintenance it has been a joy to own. It's roomy, comfortable, loaded to the eyeballs and has a ton of guts to go. I will miss this little beauty terribly. It's been 6 years of fun and has never let this family of 4 down.

The 95 Chevy Lumina is a pretty good car, as with all cars that are over 10 years old, you are bound to have gaskets that need replacing. I have an LS at ~135,000 miles right now. I must say mechanics do not like working on this 3.4L version because you have to take huge components out to fix small problems... heres an example, the battery is under the radiator fluid. This makes a 5 minute battery change take 15-20 minutes. My lumina has great passing power (with 215hp) decent handling... definitely doesn't corner like your smaller sport cars.

This car is somewhat expensive to maintain, the parts aren't too expensive, but the labor definitely kills. A tune up could cost anywhere from $500-$800 depending on how much you need replaced.

If you can get this car for cheap ($3500 or less), it's a good buy and the insurance is cheap.

The Lumina is a very difficult car to work on, but at the same time, usually doesn't need much work. Here in Las Vegas (Public Transit System) we have Luminas as our driver relief cars, and they are rock solid. Not just one, but all of them. Each one has at least 250,000 miles on it, and not a single one has been junked yet. Original transmissions, engines and major components. Keep in mind, our drivers don't treat these things nicely either. All I can sing is praise to the Lumina.
