1973 IHC Travelall from North America - Comments

"There is nothing else in the world that can compare to owning and daily driving a Travelall"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

When I bought it, the body was in amazingly good shape for a 33 year old vehicle. It would not start due to a small electrical short from mouse damage, but it was a simple fix. The interior was in, overall, servicable condition with no major tears in the seats and everything in good opperation. Other than that, I just did the standard items like plugs & wires, fuel filter, air filter, drained and flushed all fluids, rebuilt the brakes system.

General comments?

I love this thing! Fellow IHC owners will attest to this addiction. I am currently in the process of a complete restoration on my Travelall and I wouldn't trade it for any other vehicle in the world. I have the luxury of the rare 5-spd manual transmition and that combined with 3.55 gearing in the rear end, I do get a consistent 15-17 mpg on the hi-way and about 11-12 in town. This is comparable fuel economy to my fathers fuel injected '92 4wd Chevrolet 1/2 ton! No reason for complaint there and I do get many admirable looks on this old truck. There is nothing like a nearly forgotten classic to raise eyebrows! LOL.

I can attest to this IHC addiction. I had one in the latter 70s, I think mine was a 74? It got about 10mpg highway, but it was very useful and a lot of fun to drive. If I happened onto another one that got a bit better mileage overall (if such a thing exists), and didn't take a lot of time or money to restore, I'd seriously consider buying it, for those times when I need a covered truck or want to 'rough it' without worrying about 'soiling up' a family SUV.
