1996 Nissan Maxima LS from Mexico - Comments

"Worth having, but mechanics can easily mess it up"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Several oil leaks required an engine-out job.

The horns are worn out.

The power steering pump required repair.

The Bose stereo display is faulty.

General comments?

This is, overall, the most satisfying car to drive of a long string of cars I've owned. It is deceptively fast, handles reasonably well and can easily be improved to handle better. The stereo system is excellent except for the (typical) display panel fault. All the luxury items were in good order on the car when I bought it.

The Bose unit is very expensive to replace, mine went bad and even the dealer recommended not to buy a new one (~ $1200). If you replace it with an off brand you will also have to change the speakers. You can try to locate a used one that would be some what cheaper. To take the unit out is a pain also unless you know exactly what you are doing.

I've since discovered there's an excellent forum for the model, with help for fixing pretty much everything. The car seems totally reliable.

Could you please leave the link to the site, so I can learn to work on mine too. Thanks.

What is a Maxima LS? The only trims are GLE, GXE and SE. Also, a helpful website for those interested in fixing and modding their maxes is Maxima.org.com.
